OFFICIAL ANSWER

Hi All,

We're told that a tank is filled to 75% of its capacity with water. If P pounds of water would fill 60% of the tank, then how many additional pounds of water, in terms of P, must be added to the tank to fill the current 75% up to 100%? This question can be solved in a couple of different ways, including by TESTing VALUES.

To start, since we're dealing with percentages, it would likely be easiest to TEST the number 100...

Total capacity of the tank = 100 pounds

We're told that:
...the tank is FILLED to 75% of its capacity --> (.75)(100) = 75 pounds
...P pounds would fill 60% of the tank --> (.6)(100) = 60 pounds = P

We're asked to fill the tank (from 75 pounds up to 100 pounds), so we need 25 MORE pounds of water. Thus, we're looking for an answer that equals 25 when P=60. There's only one answer that matches...

Final Answer:
GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

P fills 60%
=> P/4 will fill 15%
and P/6 will fill 10%

=> P/4 + P/6 will fill 15%+10%
=> 5P/12 will fill 25%
