I am really confused why the correct answer is A. The subject and verb do not agree in number.

(A) cannot be correct as "team" is singular, so "have" cannot be correct as it must be "has".

(A), (B), and (C) are all incorrect for that reason.

(D) is missing a connector between two complete thoughts.

(E) is just nonsense.

This definitely doesn't look like an official question !

None of the options are correct.

this question answer is wrong ?

Correct Answer according to the Official Solution ( As per GMATFREE ) is (A), here's the official explanation -

Quote:
Finding objective defects: in choice (B), the words "and have" at the end makes the sentence ungrammatical. The phrase "and have" appears to refer to the team of researchers as its subject, but there is no previous verb to require the word "and." We can see this more easily to see once we ignore the modifying phrase starting with "having spent"; the word "and" is without purpose. Choice (C) has the same program as (B). Choice (D) also creates a non-sentence, leaving the verb "discovered" without a subject. Choice (E) has the same problem as (D). The correct answer is (A).

VKat, this is clearly not from an official source, but A is the only workable answer here. The author appears to be using British English (an homage to the scientists?), in which many collective nouns such as "team" are considered plural. True, this wouldn't fly on the GMAT, but the other answers have deeper problems than that.
