Can we rephrase the sentence this way?

According to a recent poll, owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults, like earlier generations.

I'm going to go against the trend here and vote for A.

that of correctly refers to the goal of young adults today owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land (gerund phrase).

What is OA?

No, because then you get an illogical comparison, comparing owning and living... to earlier generations

Oooops... I just saw a big miss! It cannot be A as I explained earlier, because although that of could refer to the goal explained, there needs to be a verb corresponding to is as well.

So I'm going to fall in line and go with E as well. In E, it refers to the goal described and was is parallel with is. The comparison is clear.

comparing goal of gen next with gen next so 'Like' is out should be 'as'

(B) as that for earlier generations
'that for' wrong idiom
(D) as have earlier generations
does not make sense...
(E) as it was of earlier generations

According to a recent poll, owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults, like that of earlier generations.
(A) like that of earlier generations
(B) as that for earlier generations
(C) just as earlier generations did
(D) as have earlier generations
(E) as it was of earlier generations

i read the previous queries related to this questions but still i am not sure if my understanding is correct. So, please correct me if i am wrong.

A)According to a recent poll, owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults, like that of earlier generations.

meaning: In this sentence the goal of present generation and earlier generations are compared.

as we have like after comma, THAT is compared to the subject of the sentence owning and living..... land.

In this sentence THAT should refer to goal. But THAT refers to the nearest noun which can be young adults, majority of young adults, or goal. so there is ambiguity.

E)as it was of earlier generations

here "it" unambiguously refers to the subject of the sentence "owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land" and doesn't refer to because when a pronoun is used just after comma it should refer to the subject.
so the sentence can be re written as :According to a recent poll, owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults, as owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land was (a goal-elipsis) of earlier generations.

the Og explanation says that option a is incorrect because phrase without subject is not parallel to the main clause.

i am not sure what does this mean.Does it mean that "that"is ambiguous ?

is there any other error that i am missing in A ??

Hi Sid, when you mention: THAT refers to the nearest noun which can be young adults, majority of young adults, or goal, I believe you are interpreting the usage of that as as relative pronoun (For example, This is the ball that burst. Here, that as as relative pronoun and refers to ball).

In the sentence under consideration, that is used as a demonstrative pronoun. You might want to refer to the discussion on the thread below, to enhance your understanding.

E is the correct answer. As+clause when presenting the comparison.

in E, there is a pronoun "it". My question is: WHY 'it' does not refer to 'house' or 'land' ?
Thanks expert...

SPLIT1) COMPARISONS. YOU WILL NEED TO MIMIC THE STRUCTURE OF THE PRIOR SENTENCE WHERE IT SAYS "OWNING A HOUSE IS A GOAL OF MAJORITY OF YOUNG ADULTS" =>NOUN AND VERB STRUCTURE => THE GOAL IS TO OWN X => A AND B DO NOT HAVE ANY VERB AT ALL. A AND B ARE OUT.

SPLIT2) ALSO, YOU WILL NEED TO MIMIC THE STRUCTURE OF THE PRIOR SENTENCE WHERE IT SAYS "OF MAJORITY OF YOUNG ADULTS" => PREPOSITIONAL CONSTRUCTION=> YOU NEED THE WORD "OF" IN THE SECOND PART TO REFER TO THE OLDER GENERATION. B AND C ARE OUT.

SPLIT3) PARALLELISM = IN THE FIRST PART OF THE SENTENCE THEY SAY THAT THE GOAL OF THE YOUNGER GENERATION IS TO OWN PROPERTY, SO THE MAIN IDEAD IS THAT X "IS THE GOAL", THE SECOND PART OF THE SENTENCE SHOULD FOLLOW THIS STRUCTURE OF PARALLELISM. "HAVE" AND "DID" ARE NOT PARALLEL => DO NOT MATCH. EXAMPLE: "I AM AMERICA, AND YOU CAN TOO". C AND D ARE OUT.

Hi Expert,
Hope you're all well. Here the correct answer is E. Can you help me by saying what ''it'' and ''its'' refers to in this sentence, please? I mean what is the antecedent of these 2 things?
Thank you...

The its goes to house (a freestanding house on its own land). The it refers to owning and living.

Thank you for your kind response. But, if we replace owning and living with it, then the whole sentence becomes:
According to a recent poll, owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults, as owning and living was of earlier generations.. Does the RED part indicate any goal of earlier generation?
This sentence doesn't make sense to me yet. Does this sentence make sense to you brother?
Thanks again for your kind response.

I should have been clearer: the it points to the entire phrase with owning and living at its head. That is, the it points to owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land. Let's refer to that entire bit as XYZ.

XYZ is a still a goal of young adults, as it was of earlier generations.

XYZ is a still a goal of young adults, as XYZ was (a goal) of earlier generations.
The a goal bit is understood.
