A should be the answer.
more women over X than under it.

the sentence is comparing the age of women and not the age of babies born, so rule out B and E.
C and D - ruled out because of lack of parallelism. - more women over X than "they were"/"than there had been" is incorrect..

A. than
B. than born
C. than they were
D. than there had been
E. than had been born

under it = under the age (of thirty)

if you replace each answer choice, only A would make sense.

A.

Can someone please tell me if my reasoning is correct???

After 'than' you see 'under': look back in the sentence whats the opposite of 'under' its 'over'…. So what comes after over in the original sentence …it is ' to women' ….so read sentence by putting (to women ) in brackets after than and before under…. You will see option A is correct…

Under it refers to under the age of thirty.
A – Parallel. Over the age Vs under it. It refers to “age of thirty”
B – Not parallel. Eliminate
C – same as B. They could refer to women or babies. Eliminate
D – Not parallel . There refers to ? . Eliminate
E – Not parallel. Eliminate

As per me this would be more accurate, even not present in the options -"more babies were born to women over the age of thirty than to those under it.
We are comparing number of babies born to women above thirty to number of babies born to women below 30.

+1 for A :-D ... Sheer Parallelism

B. than born --> wrong comparison (babies)
C. that they were --> wrong comparison (Babies)
D. than there had been --> Had been ???
E. than had been born --> wrong comparison (Babies)

Hi

Can someone please explain how parallelism exsits in this sentence? I don't see how one is better than the other. For example, in my mind, B could read:

-Born to women over the age of thirty than born (to women) under it.

The "to women" part is implied in A so why can't it be implied in B?

According to public health officials, in 1998 Massachusetts became the first state in which more babies were born to women over the age of thirty than under it.

Basically
more babies were born to women over the age of thirty
than
babies were born to women under the age of thirty

age of thirty -> it
"babies were born to women" is ellipsed.

A. than -> Hence correct
B. than born
C. than they were
D. than there had been
E. than had been born

I have a same reason as you. But I answered C because I thought they refer to babies. but they can refer to women. This is ok. I got it.

However, if it has a choice like this.

F. than babies were

Is it correct?

this question involves comparison and the idiom involved for comparing id more x than y
as the meaning says we need to compare women over the age of thirty to women under the
age of thirty

A.correct than
women is implicit after than and it refers to age of thirty
B. Incorrectthan born
if anything implicit one could think of is babies and is wrong
C. Incorrectthan they were
"they" is ambiguous. even if they is correct but meaning-wise this answer is wrong
D. Incorrectthan there had been
use of had been is wrong and what had been under it ??
E. Incorrectthan had been born
babies born under thirty??

this question tests you on parallelism and meaning.

"than" requires parallelism. Also, note that "it" refers to "age of thirty".

"more babies were born to women over the age of thirty than under it." - Note that for parallelism, we start from right to left. See what is parallel to "under it" on the Left hand side of "than".

A maintains parallelism and hence is the correct answer. Since the sentence maintains parallelism what is implied here -
More babies were born to women over the age of thirty than [babies were born to women] under it.

B - Incorrect answer.
Answer option does not maintain parallelism. let us look at parallelism -
"more babies were born to women over the age of thirty than born under it."

Not perfectly parallel. "to women" is missing in RHS.
This answer option nonsensically implies that "[babies were] born under age of thirty".

C - Incorrect answer.

"more babies were born to women over the age of thirty than they were under it.". - two clauses are in parallel; however, "to women" is omitted. this changes the meaning of the sentence.

this sentence implies that babies were born under age of 30. - Illogical.

D - Incorrect.
Usage of past perfect is incorrect. We are referring to a specific time period - 1998.
Also, this option changes the meaning of the sentence.

E - Incorrect.
Usage of past perfect is incorrect. We are referring to a specific time period - 1998.
Changes the meaning of the sentence (like option B) -
"more babies were born to women over the age of thirty than had been born under it."

Not perfectly parallel. "to women" is missing in RHS.
This answer option nonsensically implies that "babies had been born under age of thirty".
