According to the table shown, the estimated number of home-schooled students in State A is approximately what percent greater than the number in State D?

The estimated number of home-schooled students in State A = 181
The estimated number of home-schooled students in State B = 79

Difference = 181 - 79 = 102
% Greater = Difference*100% / The estimated number of home-schooled students in State B = 102/79 = 125%

Hence D

For a quicker approach, we can first double 79, 79*2=158, which is 100 percent increase from 79.
that will boil down the answer choices to D or E.
Its clearly 125 percent as we see 158+1/4*79= ~182.

I used this way of solving :
When they say 181 is what percent greater than 79, we could do the following
181 = 79 + x% of 79
181 = 79 (1+x/100)
Rounding off we get 180 = 80 (1+x/100);
This works out to x = 120; Hence Close to Option D

This is a percent difference problem.

The formula for percent difference is ("new" - "base")/"base" = p/100 = p%

or you could say ("new" - "old")/"old" = p/100 = p%

Which number is the "new" number and which number is the "base" number? The base number is the amount that comes after the word "than" in the question.

State D comes after the word "than", so State D is the base.

The "new" number is State A and the base is State D.

(A - D)/D = p/100 = p%

(181 - 79)/79 = p/100 = p%

The question includes the word "approximately," so we can do a little bit of rounding. We'll say

(180 - 80)/80 = 100/80 = p/100 = p%

p = 125, therefore the answer is 125%

Answer D

Note, by the way, that since 100 in bigger than 80 the correct answer has to be greater than 100%.
