This is going to be my first time finding an apartment in NYC. I'm curious - how are y'all going to run an apartment search? Any way to find compatible roommates? Are most people who don't already live in NYC going to live on the UWS? Anyone done any homework on what rent might be on the UWS?
Hey Philly, some advice that I got from a fellow classmate that lives in Manhattan:
"I would definitely do some internet searching of the immediate area. It really depends on what you are looking for and what you are looking to spend (it will shock you), but Morningside Heights is a great neighborhood and not nearly as expensive as other parts of downtown.
If on-campus doesn't work out, other than Craigslist, you should definitely check out
www.nybits.com (
https://www.nybits.com/apartments/mornin ... dings.html) and
www.residentialnyc.gov to have a look at it. Ultimately, the way to do it if you can is try to get to the City and spend a few days looking at places 3-4 weeks before you move in, that's the sweet spot. If you have the time, you can save some time and go directly to property management rather than brokers. If not, you may have to contact the University for a reputable broker or connect with one of the reputable firms.
It's my understanding that a lot of people tend to live on the Upper West Side by my neighborhood as there's a little more going on and there may be some more availability of housing options."
Hope this helps, I am waiting to hear back on university housing myself but if that doesn't work out then I'll be searching around on my own too. My general feel on the university housing prices is around $900-1000/month, depending on if it's furnished might go a little higher than that.
