I agree...I havent used my dvd drive once this semester. And that probably adds a hundred bucks to the cost of the laptop.

Question for Steel - why does KIS (Kellogg tech support) survey DAK 1 participants for their laptop feature preference? I believe KIS should ask current first years because we know what features are really needed. The T61 has alot of junk (ie, CDDVD drive) that really doesn't add much value. The X61 really is a better choice for the student who has to walk 10-15 minutes to school each day.

Good question for KIS - probably to make incoming students feel involved in their laptop purchase.

same here, which is why I got an X200. People were all panicking, "what if I need a DVD drive???", and now everyone who has an X61/X200 said they never needed it once, and those with T61s also never used theirs.

The extra 1-2 lbs may not seem like much, but when you're carrying that freakin' heavy backpack all day, it makes a huge difference!

Mine came via UPS 2 and a half weeks after I got the admit call. With the holidays, it may just still be in process/in transit.

Been lurking for a while and first of all wanted to thank everyone for their informative posting. Hope I can add to it. Secondly, I'm a Kellogg 2011 admit and wanted to ask your advice about something.

I'm based in Asia and will be vacationing for a month starting in a week in some remote parts of the continent. I still haven't received my welcome pack and I'm assuming I wont get it before I take off, which means I won't get any of my login info until I'm back in mid-Feb. I'm a student, so I don't even have someone like a coworker or an assistant -- or even family, and my neighbors only speak Chinese -- that could open my pack and email me the info.

Can I call to get my login info or is the only way to get it via post? I don't want to annoy admissions since I know they are swamped right now, so I figured I'd see what people think first.

I would call...you are already admitted you dont have to worry about annoying admissions. At this point they are there to try to get you to attend...so you really wont be bothering them like someone calling for the tenth time asking if they are releasing decisions today. They may not have the information available, your log on could be with the computer people but they will let you know.

I was in a similar situation and I called them. I was able to get my login information for the Accepted students website. I was also told that they were having some issues (with sending out the packages) but we should be receiving them within the next 2 weeks.

Thanks, guys! :-D

Looks like I'll be calling them tonight.

Since I'm international, when I got the "you're in but no call because of time zone dif" email, I actually wrote back with this question since the email said "I'm your point person here for any questions." Never heard anything back. Assume ad coms was busy, but I figured they would have at least returned my email. Calling is such a pain with the time difference. Oh well.

Sorry I won't be meeting any of you at DAK (I just can't make it back to the US). Will eagerly await some of your impressions here.

Baozi, I am betting that the email address the send that email from isnt someone's real account so it probably just goes into some folder that no one is responsible for. Send me a PM if you want and I can get you the real email for an adcom or two.

On a happier note I got into a class off the waitlist and now my schedule this semester is perfect basically. I woke up for an 8:30 class only to see that I was moved into the 1:30 class which is taught by the star professor for that course.

I thought so too, but the email was all "This is me! Your personal contact! Contact me!" So I figured I'd have a go. You are probably right that my lovely little note has been banished to spam folder hell, lost and gone forever.

Anyway, got it straightened out by calling the office and got my login info ... only to find out my login info is not working. The main office desk didn't seem to have any idea what to do and forwarded me along to someone where I left a message, so looks like I'll be making another midnight phone call tomorrow. Man, I hate this time difference.

For anyone still waiting for their admit letter, I'm happy to say I heard back from Kellogg today. They explained the holiday season caused a minor delay, and the packages will be sent out this week.
