re: hotels and getting there:
I second the idea of finding someone to share a cab with from the airport, it's the FASTEST AND CHEAPEST way to get to Evanston (the El takes upwards of 2 hours, it's a pain). I shared my cab with ghgirl and another admit from the Kellogg admit website.
I shared a room with terry12 at Orrington I think, saved us a lot of money (still came out to be $200+ for the 2-3 nights there though).
re: smart phones:
I held out for a while, but ended up with a Palm Centro because I needed the massive scheduling capability and it made no sense for me to carry a phone and a Palm Pilot with me at all times. I'm waiting for the new Palm coming out early 2009 (promised to me by my classmate, a former Palm employee working on this project). If that fails, I may go for the iPhone or something else. I just can't stand typing on a screen though...
You can survive without a smart phone if you have a good organizer, but there will be a lot of syncing with Outlook and other people's schedules, so having an electronic schedule organizer with you is very useful. Your day will be filled and changing at all times, so you need something like that handy. I actually don't browse the web much on my phone (because of the super slow EDGE network with AT&T), but it's nice having Gmail and a simple browser handy when needed.

I have the Kellogg laptop my views on it and the program as a whole:
Cons:
Its a vista based Levono...had some bugs and I hate the new versions of word and excel.
Had a macbook pro so it too me a while to get used to it.
Its big and heavy.
Battery life is so so...but there are plus at all the seats in classes and in study rooms.
Pros:
Service...have an issue bring it in and if they cant solve it quickly you get a loaner.
Its a pretty good deal for a pretty good computer.
Excel in class was done using the latest version so its easier to follow along.
No issues with email or setting it up like some people faced with different computers.
Tech support, have an issue with something and they know how to deal with it (definintely not that way with macs).
The computer is far more rugged than a lot of them...my macbook feels like it might break if you look at it wrong.
As for smart phones, I too am a hold out but will be buying an iphone before I return Evanston for next semester. As Steel pointed out you are always rushing for one place to another and you dont want to be late for appointments because you had to wait for your comp to boot up. My advice though would be wait until spring or summer to see if a new version comes out.

I did not purchase a Kellogg laptop because it was too bulky. I bought a Lenovo X61 with Windows XP -- to add to what RR and Steel said:
If you get your own laptop, make sure its with a brand known for quality -- there is a chance something will go wrong with your computer -- tech support will try and help, but if its a hardware issue, you are on your own. I got the super duper Lenovo warranty and on-site support just in case something goes wrong.
Also, back up your files regularly (I should follow my own advice here, and I am going to do it tonight). If something DOES happen, if your files are backed up using Mozy or something, you should be fine.
As for phone, I don't really miss my smart phone at all. I always have my computer at school. And the times I don't have my computer is the time when I don't really care to be disturbed. Being connected all the time has its downfalls. Put another way -- not having a smartphone has not hindered me in any way. Then again, I always have my computer near whether at home or school.
Question for Steel - why does KIS (Kellogg tech support) survey DAK 1 participants for their laptop feature preference? I believe KIS should ask current first years because we know what features are really needed. The T61 has alot of junk (ie, CDDVD drive) that really doesn't add much value. The X61 really is a better choice for the student who has to walk 10-15 minutes to school each day.
