My take on DAK II:

The People - This was the biggest highlight of the weekend. Everyone (students, admits, faculty, & staff) was really down-to-earth, smart, personable, accomplished, etc. Getting to know everyone better is what gets me the most excited about this fall.

Thursday Night
  • Dinner with GMAT Clubbers was a blast. A great group of people - very easygoing, accomplished, etc. It was great to put faces to the usernames. Looking forward to getting to know everyone better when we get to Evanston.
  • Special thanks to Steel for joining us and answering questions. Very much appreciated.
  • Receptions at various bars were fun - rca & I went to a couple. Met a few students. Seemed like a great crowd. Went to bed around 12.

Friday
  • Opening Ceremonies - Beth Flye went through a long list of admits' accomplishments. Tragically, I wasn't included.
  • Section Time - My section's leaders couldn't have been better. Did some ice breakers. Good times.
  • Welcome Address by Dean Jain - Very good but didn't meet my expectations. Perhaps it was hyped up too much. He was also very hard to hear - the mic wasn't turned on loud enough, which made it tough for those of us in the back.
  • Academics @ Kellogg - Interesting overview of academics, but nothing I hadn't already learned.
  • Professor Rountable Lunch - I was a BIG FAN of this. Went to the health/biotech lunch w/ Prof. Dranove. Even though I've worked in biotech, this gave me a much broader perspective on the industry than I had previously had. Also gave me a huge amount of confidence in Kellogg's strength in this arena. Dranove was great - funny, knowledge, personable. This was one of the highlights of the weekend.
  • Mini Classes - Absolutely terrific - one of the highlights of the weekend. First class was Advertising Strategy w/ Prof. Mary Pearlman. Kicked @$$. And suddenly I feel an unexplained desire to drink Bud Light. Go figure.
  • Financial Aid Info Session - Not particularly useful. All the info is online.
  • Career Services Overview - Terrific overview of what's available through the CMC. Yes, the internship and full-time numbers are lower this year than in years past, but I was impressed with how strong Kellogg is doing relative to the economic climate.
  • Section Time - This turned out to be a pitch for the Kellogg Laptop Program. Not useful to me, given that I have a strong technical background and had already decided to not buy the laptop. Wish I had skipped.
  • TG - Free beer. Need I say more?
  • KWEST Trip Fair - Gave me a much better sense for the trip leaders, which has already had a big impact on my preferences. Met some great people and couldn't be more excited about KWEST. Can we fast-forward to August?
  • Taste of Evanston - My table was absurdly amazing. A very qualified bunch of admits. Also met the guy who was featured in Beth Flye's list of accomplishments for skydiving 700+ times.
  • Keg - Met tons of great admits and had a blast. Took a beer taste test, finally putting my expert skills to good use. Got free beer as a result. Strangely, my preferred beer was made by Budweiser - didn't see that one coming. Good times.

Saturday
  • Tour of Kellogg Facilities - Turned out to be more of an IT info session than anything else. With 10 minutes to go, someone thankfully asked to see the building. Thought the tour lacked tourness. Weird. But the facilities, particularly the classrooms, were nicer than I had imagined (I wasn't able to take a tour when I interviewed). Nicer than Stanford. On par with Sloan. Nothing compared to HBS, Wharton and Booth, though definitely just as functional as the others.
  • Scavenger Hunt - As someone who doesn't typically go nuts over scavenger hunts, I was surprised to find that I had a total blast doing this. Got to know my section mates even better - really fun, personable group. Scavenger hunt was also very practical - gave me a much better sense for the NWU campus and the Kellogg building (was a much better tour than the "tour").
  • Career Break-out Lunches - Went to PE and consulting lunches. Both were phenomenal - among the highlights of the weekend. Met an alumn from my undergrad institution at the consulting lunch - had a great chat with him afterward.
  • Alumni Panel Discussion - The VP of Marketing at McDonald's was one of the alumni on my section's panel. That was a total shock - couldn't believe that someone at the pinnacle of brand management would take an hour of their time to talk to admits. Very impressive. All 3 alumni were very successful and refreshingly honest (which was also true of all the students and faculty). They openly discussed what they liked and disliked about K. One alumni took a few shots at Booth, though it seemed in good fun. Another said that HBS students will always have a slight advantage immediately following school but gave his perspective that they don't work well in teams (his perspective, not mine). All 3 stressed that Kellogg's focus on teamwork places it at a huge advantage - after all, the world of business is all about people.
  • Coffee Chat with Current Students - Spent 45 minutes talking with 2 extremely helpful, personable students. Talked to one about various KWEST options and to the other about academics and the Board Fellows program. BF sounds absolutely amazing. I had read about it previously and am convinced that it places Kellogg toward the top of the list for those wanting to pursue nonprofit management. Given the fact that I started a nonprofit a year ago, which has been one of the best experiences of my life, I naturally hope to get into this program (it'd help me learn how to improve my NP's board). It's highly selective, but I'm crossing my fingers. https://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/stu ... ellows.htm
  • Kellogg Experience - 2 students went through a typical day's schedule. Not particularly informative - very little detail. The HBS website does a much better job of showing you in detail what a typical day in a student's life is like. I was expecting something with a similar level of detail, so this was a bit disappointing.
  • Club Fair - Got tons of great information about various clubs, particularly healthcare/biotech, consulting and PE/VC. Spent the flight home reading the PE/VC materials - top notch and gave me more confidence in Kellogg's ability to help me break into this arena.
  • Closing Ceremonies - The location in Chicago was top notch - River East Art Center, an art gallery. Beautiful place with great food and OPEN BAR. Had a blast and got to know several more admits.
  • Zella in Chicago. Good times. Stayed out until 2am.

Sunday
  • Saw my new apartment. Signed a sublease for July. Excited about my new home - plan on having tons of parties.

HUGE thanks to the DAK leadership team for putting this together. They did a phenomenal job - couldn't have asked for more. Had a great weekend!

Funny you say that. My 2nd mini-class was marketing with that big-time professor (she was downright awesome, as was the strategy prof). We discussed McDonalds, which totally made me feel better about that 3am Burger King indulgence. (and is leading me to seriously consider a marketing major)

I saw you as the hunt was wrapping up. To put it lightly, you guys looked intense. Seriously pumped up. You were way too focused on the prize to notice me as you powered by.

I hope you won (I don't recall winners being announced). But I agree that this was the best tour. QSR and LSR as acronyms suddenly made so much sense.

For those who will be around, I will attend the Kellogg Latin American Business Conference:
https://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/LAB ... index.htm#

As the guys from north never come downtown - or if they come they don't want to hang around with us from Booth - I would be glad to meet you there!

Isa, you would be ok with either school. Kellogg is an excellent school. Well you would probably better with Chicago, but nobody is perfect . You will have a great time in Evanston.

Hi Kwam, I should be around that weekend. Let me know what your schedule's going to look like.

Hahaha. Yeah, I guess we were a bit intense. Not sure how that happened, but we all got into it. And yeah, I totally missed you as we ripped by with razer-sharp focus.

I do too! Was thinking about emailing one of my section leads to see who won. Given that this is the first time in my life that I actually took a scavenger hunt seriously, I have an unshakable urge to know if we won. Ha, weird.

i do want to say it was great meeting everyone at the gmatclub dinner (although a few of us ended up at the same spot the next night for the student dinners).

as everyone said earlier, kellogg people are very social and nice....honestly i've never seen anything like it. I loved how people just came by, sat next to you, and said hi. Very cool.

The other shock was the diversity in career interests. it's fanastic! As a finance person, i'm excited to meet people with other interests. I think during the lunch breakout for finance a current student said only about 20% of students are looking for finance positions.

Just to describe the party scene, i was out til 2 thursday night, 6 friday (much of it with shayne), and 3 the last.

I definitely enjoyed everyone's reaction to volatile nature of chicago's weather....ahhh...sweet home chicago. :-D

My marketing mini class focused on the advertising strategy for Marmite. Not surprisingly it did not at all even remotely give me any desire to have Marmite.

Glad you guys all had a good time at DAK2, and really looking forward to meeting you all in August at OhThatMBA's parties.

Haha! Wirgleyville was fun mate....good call! I did manage to make it to the breakfast the next morning at 8:30 am however you were no where to be seen

I expected to have a good weekend and it indeed was a blast. Personally for me and I think coolrun would agree with me since we both have an NU connection and are locals, there was nothing novel about the Northwestern campus, Jacobs Center, downtown Chicago or Evanston but I was simply blown away by the quality and diversity of the fellow admits and how easy-going everyone was. There were some very interesting resumes and it felt great to be part of such an elite and smart group of people.

Chicago is a great city and I love my life here. I had a blast back in my Northwestern days so it hasn't been a hard decision to return to Evanston after all these years.

Indeed it was a pleasure meeting the gmatclubbers for dinner on Thursday.

Steel: great job by you and the rest of your DAC exec committee for all the planning and putting together such an awesome weekend. The attention to detail was simply immaculate.

Really?? They were making a run for the Ford building and with less than 2 minutes to go and I didn't see many Michael Johnsons and Marion Jones amongst them so I don't think they would have made it past the parking lot, let alone get to the Ford building and return in time...I think if you redo the points you'll find out that it was infact the Hill Climbers led by Kenny who actually won

Any current students have thoughts on the two classes below as electives (for 1Ys in the summer)? Do you think the probability/statistics/regression content will be valuable for later MORS/Management & Strategy courses?

Managerial Decision Analysis (DECS-438-A)
0.50 Credit

Description:
This course presents the standard approach taken in all Kellogg courses in dealing with risk and uncertainty. The principal focus is on the language of probability, random variables, decision trees and commonly encountered probability distributions. A number of applications are explored, with most analysis performed using spreadsheets. Prerequisite: One-Year-student status.

Statistical Decision Analysis (DECS-439-B)
0.50 Credit

Description:
The study of statistics at Kellogg has two complementary goals: The first is to master the two languages of statistics: How to measure how much an estimate can be trusted and how to measure the weight of evidence with respect to a claim that has been made. The objective is to become knowledgeable consumers of statistical reports, effective managers of those doing the statistical "dirty work" and confident critics of statistics done badly. The other goal is to become facile at performing regression analysis, a tool for understanding the types of relationships all managers must deal with. A spreadsheet-based statistical analysis package is provided to all students. Prerequisite: One-Year-student status.

Ever taken finance before? I'm debating whether to take regular vs. turbo but I have no finance background. It'll be interesting to see what your experience is like.

One intro finance course in undergrad (B+ :)) and some finance-ish work, but nothing super intensive. Unfortunately for us 1Ys its Turbo or nothing, so I'll go for it. Technically I think it's an elective so maybe I can do it Pass/Fail.

You guys might have an interest in this: https://www.economist.com/business/busin ... d=13567183

It follows various Kellogg students on their job searches. It's a bit high-level, so I don't know if it will have practical benefit. Either way it makes for interesting reading.
