First split: "When" vs "in which" vs "during which":
the intended meaning is that AC wrote its work during an extended period of time, not at one point in the timeline,
When: first: it doesn't convey the time interval , but a certain point of time;
second: as a pronoun, it modify one noun so at best cases it will modify 1940 only. --> A,D out

in which: first: it doesn't imply the extended period of time which is intended by the meaning,
second: "which" can modify one noun, so "in which" will refer to 1940, which will mean that all the work written was in one year only; but this is not what is intended --> B out

Second split: "during which" vs " a period during which":
the noun "period" was so important for "which" to be grammatically correct.
"during which" as no clear antecedent noun to modify. it is implied that we are talking about "a period", but the noun is not there --> C out

Agatha Christie wrote some of her best works between 1920 and 1940, a period when many successful light-hearted whodunits were written.

A. a period when
when refers to a period

B. in which
which can't be used for a time frame

C. during which
no antecedant for which

D. when
if you replace just when, it sounds awkward.

E. a period during which
which is correctly used for "a period"

Agatha Christie wrote some of her best works between 1920 and 1940, a period when many successful light-hearted whodunits were written.

A. a period when ---
B. in which ----in which modifies only 1940 and this is incorrect
C. during which --- this modifies only 1940 and this is incorrect
D. when -- using only "when" distorts the intended meaning
E. a period during which ----

between A and E, they both correctly modify "between 1920 and 1940",
but I believe E is better because this time period (20 years) is something long and "during" fits better here.

This one is so short yet so confusing!! Heres my thought process:

Agatha Christie wrote some of her best works between 1920 and 1940, a period when many successful light-hearted whodunits were written.

Looks like a noun phrase modifier?? (I am working on improving my jargon :) )

XA. a period when
>>DURING WHICH refers to a period better than WHEN. Because it is throughout a continous period.

XB. in which
>>DURING is better because it describes an action performed throughout a continous time period.

XC. during which
>>During which looks correct, but without A PERIOD, it is not clear as to what which refers to, period? works? agatha christie? Option E seems to be better than C.

XD. when
>>DURING is better because it describes an action performed throughout a continous time period.

E. a period during which
>> THIS IS CORRECT. During which is used to describe action performed throughoit time period + a period correctly identified the period 1920 to 1940 which is being modified.

Tough question as my SC skills are lame :)

A. a period when
I like it
We have a good noun modifier
"When" is a noun modifier and refers to time entity noun (period)

B. in which
this is incorrect because it tries to modify "between 1920 and 1940" we need some time entity noun

C. during which
incorrect combination of those two words

D. when
the same as in B

E. a period during which
now we have noun modification but during which is still incorrect

IMO

The most important part of the sentence is its non-underlined part:

Agatha Christie wrote some of her best works between 1920 and 1940...

Next we are going to describe a two-decade period between 1920 and 1940. If we describe this period with a period when, then we will mean that Agatha Christie wrote her best works at some point between 1920 and 1940, let’s say in 1925. A period when will refer to this exact year 1925, and mean that some of her best works were written not periodically during two decades, but exactly in 1925 (or at any other certain time point). Not the intended meaning.

If we describe a two-decade period between 1920 and 1940 with a period during which, then we mean that some of her best works were written during this two decades, let’s say one of them in 1924, the second one in 1932, the third one in 1937, etc. That’s the reason why the author points out to the time period between 1920 and 1940. In order to deliver the correct meaning we prefer a period during which to a period when.

With that in mind let’s analyze answer choices.

A. between 1920 and 1940, a period when many successful light-hearted whodunits were written

We have already thoroughly analyzed why this answer choice doesn’t deliver the intended meaning.

B. between 1920 and 1940, in which many successful light-hearted whodunits were written

Which must refer to a noun, but between 1920 and 1940 is an adverb modifying a verb wrote. Thus which doesn’t correctly modify a time period.

C. between 1920 and 1940, during which many successful light-hearted whodunits were written

Which must refer to a noun, but between 1920 and 1940 is an adverb modifying a verb wrote. Thus which doesn’t correctly modify a time period.

D. between 1920 and 1940, when many successful light-hearted whodunits were written

As in A, when doesn’t correctly emphasize a two-decade time period, but it refers to a certain point in that period. Not-intended meaning.

E. between 1920 and 1940, a period during which many successful light-hearted whodunits were written

As we have already discussed above a period during which conveys the intended meaning.

Hence E.

Agatha Christie wrote some of her best works between 1920 and 1940, a period when many successful light-hearted whodunits were written.

meaning: AC wrote her works between 1920 and 1940 during this period many whodunits were written.
error analysis: here after the clause, a noun + relative clause modifier is used. this Noun + noun modifier is needed when a noun is needed to remove the ambiguity
or to refer to any of the previous nouns mentioned.
Here, when is a relative pronoun clause when modifies time during specific time. so a noun to modify the time and the specific time relative pronoun is not doing any good to refer to the complete period between 1920 and 1940. period is fine atleast , but when is the spoilsport as the second clause intends to show a time frame..

few grammar to take note
in ( as in which) is used when some kind of entity which is bounded and something can happen inside. eg country, jar, bottle,
during( as in during which) is used to mention the time frame.
when is used for the specific event. ie something happened, when he was doing something. at that time something happened. that specific time when is used.

POE,
A. a period when ( error as mentioned in analysis)

B. in which
( neither which is a time modifier nor the event happens inside something, utter wrong)

C. during which
(As during is actually used to mention the period or time frame. During which is apt and crisp. as during which clearly mentions the second clause happened during the period mentioned in the earlier sentence. . so this conveys. lets keep this for a while)

D. when
(When is used for the specific period of time, so this is completely wrong as we have to mention the period in preceding clause)

E. a period during which
( a period during which is redundant, as during actually refers to the time frame. so a period need not be mentioned . so this is a candidate against no other best choice. but for us as C is there we can remove this. )

so C is the ans

Hence ans c is correct.

Agatha Christie wrote some of her best works between 1920 and 1940, a period when many successful light-hearted whodunits were written.

A. a period when
Use of when is incorrect since it is a period and not a specific time.
B. in which
Use of in which is incorrect since it is a period and not a specific time.
C. during which
during which is incorrect since it is not clear whether if refers to "1940" or "between1920 and 1940"
D. when
Use of when is incorrect since it is a period and not a specific time.
E. a period during which
Agatha Christie wrote some of her best works between 1920 and 1940, a period during which many successful light-hearted whodunits were written.
The sentence is correct and unambiguous.

C. during which
D. when
E. a period during which

Here the underlined part, after the comma should modify the period between 1920 and 1940.

A. a period when : here the noun +noun modifier is incorrectly used because of the word when.
B. in which : this is incorrect modifier as it does not modify the period
C. during which : this is a verb modifier modifying wrote, hence there can be a meaning error.
D. when :same as A incorrect use of when.
E. a period during which :Correct as 'a period' is a noun modifying '1920 and 1940' and during which correctly modifies the period.

Hence option E

IMO- E

Agatha Christie wrote some of her best works between 1920 and 1940, a period when many successful light-hearted whodunits were written.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note 1- As per the intended meaning of the sentence, Second portion after comma should act as a modifier modifying the duration between 1920-1940.
Note 2- "between 1920 and 1940"- Specify a period
Note 3- "During" Vs "In"
* "During" indicates a period or range of time (having duration) and is used to say that something happened. "throughout this time" or "sometime within this time".
* After a verb that focuses on an activity, "during" is used to indicate a period or range of time for the activity. The meaning of the verb expresses a durative action or state.

* "When" is used to mention about an activity which takes place ‘during a specific period of time’ i.e. to connect two events happening at the same time.
* When is used to say a longer action which was interrupted by a shorter action.

* "In" specifies when an activity occurs/occurred, the timing of the activity—part of day, month, season, year
* After a verb that focuses on an activity, "in" sounds awkward when indicating a period or range of time for the activity.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. a period when ----Incorrect---- With use of "when" (as stated above) the essence of continuity or "throughout the time is lost.

B. in which----Incorrect----In referring to what is ambiguous - whether 1940 or the interval between 1920 and 1940. Use of "In" to indicate a period or range of time is incorrect. "In" used when timing of activity is to be specified, but as per passage light-hearted whodunits were written throughout the passage of time between 1920 & 1940.Sense of continuity is lost in this.

C. during which ----Incorrect-------Use of during after comma no longer seems to modify duration "between 1920 and 1940". Intended meaning is lost. Also by dropping a period it become ambiguous whether the second action took place between 1920 and 1940 or throughout the year 1940 only.

D. when---Incorrect--------when referring to what is ambiguous - whether 1940 or the interval between 1920 and 1940. Also, both action , Agatha Christie wrote & light-hearted whodunits were written, are taking place at the same time. One action is not interrupted by the other. so use of when is incorrect.

E. a period during which-------Correct----------"A period" clearly refers to duration between 1920 and 1940. Use of "during" depicts the essence of continuity of both the action simultaneously.noun+noun modifier)

Time period takes 'when' and not 'which'.

A. a period when --> Correct option. period considers years between 1920 and 1940. when is rightly used to refer to time period.
B. in which --> which is incorrect to describe time period.
C. during which --> which is incorrect to describe time period.
D. when --> when can only refer to year 1940. Since we are referring to time period between 1920 and 1940, it should be followed by a period.
E. a period during which --> which is incorrect to describe time period.

Error Analysis: Because a time period is being referred and not not a specific date/time, it is appropriate to use "in which" rather than "when". "a period+in which" acts as a noun+noun modifier modifying the preceding clause.

A.a period when -Incorrect, for the reasons stated in the Error Analysis
B. in which - Incorrect, 'which' doesn't have an appropriate referant
C. during which- Incorrect, 'which' doesn't have an appropriate referant
D. when- Incorrect, just as (A)
E. a period during which -Correct, adding 'during' in place of 'in' is same.

A. a period when
B. in which
C. during which
D. when
E. a period during which

The typical GMAT question, which tears me apart.
Happily, I find out that both A and E are wrong.
And here is my explanation: from the context and style of the sentence we get that Agatha Christie wrote her best works between 1920 and 1940. We don't need a word "period" after this statement. "When" is enough to clarify that between 1920 and 1940 also many successful light-hearted whodunits were written.

So my brave-hearted option is D.

A. a period when
B. in which
C. during which
D. when
E. a period during which

Rule1- Comma + Which are unanimously used together and in the same sequence as mentioned
Rule2- 'Which' always modifies its preceding word

Using above rules we can eliminate options B, C & E.
D can be easily eliminated since sentence 'when many successful light-hearted whodunits were written" leaves it incomplete.
Hence option A is the clear winner

The sentence consists of two parts:
(1) Agatha Christie wrote some of her best works between 1920 and 1940, and
(2) many successful light-hearted whodunits were written in that period

A. a period when
BEST ANSWER. This choice is grammatically correct as it effectively uses proper noun phrase a period when ... were written to relate to the main clause. That period, described in the noun phrase, is between 1920 and 1940.

B. in which
The word which has no clear referent. Such use of word which may mean either that many whodunits were written in 1920 or that many whodunits were written in 1940. Adding the noun "period" before the phrase beginning with in which effectively eliminates the ambiguity of the word which.

C. during which
Same issue as in (B). The word which has no clear referent. Such use of word which may mean either that many whodunits were written during 1920 or that many whodunits were written during 1940. Adding the noun "period" before the phrase beginning with during which eliminates the aforementioned ambiguity.

D. when
Same issue as in (B) and (C). The word when has no clear referent. Such use of word when may mean either that many whodunits were written in 1920 or that many whodunits were written in 1940. Adding the noun "period" before the phrase beginning with when will effectively eliminate such ambiguity.

E. a period during which
This choice seems grammatically correct as it effectively uses proper noun phrase a period during which... were written. However, the phrase a period during which... is wordier and less preferred than the phrase a period when...

Answer is (A)

Agatha Christie wrote some of her best works between 1920 and 1940, a period when many successful light-hearted whodunits were written.

A. a period when
When is used for specific time here its for the duration. Incorrect

B. in which
We can not say in which for time. During is better than this option. Incorrect

C. during which
Makes sense. During that period, which is specifying. But E makes more sense.

D. when
Only when is incorrect.

E. a period during which
It is specifying that was a period during which something happened.
Correct.
