CAN I USE AI FOR MY MASTER'S ESSAYS?
Plus: Is Paris Worth It? Who Should Write Your Recommendation Letters?
Three questions come up in almost every MiM applicant group chat: can I use AI, do I need a school in Paris or London, and who should write my letters? Each one has a popular answer, and each popular answer is mostly wrong. Here's the evidence, laid out so you can decide in ten minutes instead of ten nights of forum scrolling.

▌ 01 Can I use AI for my Master's essays?
Short answer: sometimes, for some tasks, at some schools. Never for writing the essay itself.
There is no universal rule. Some schools allow brainstorming and light editing, some require you to disclose any AI use, and some ban AI-generated content entirely. Columbia Business School, for example, allows AI for ideas and edits but treats AI-generated full responses as an Honor Code violation that can cost you your offer. Stanford GSB and NYU Stern prohibit AI-generated content, according to public policy trackers. And many programs, including many MiMs, publish no explicit policy at all, which is not the same as permission.

"But detectors don't work." Detection software is imperfect, but it's rarely what catches a borrowed essay. Here's where the risk actually sits:

AI use during live interviews is prohibited even at schools that are otherwise relaxed about AI. A former Wharton admissions head has described exactly how obvious the switch is when a candidate's rough drafts suddenly turn polished and wordy.
Fits you if: you use AI like a tough friend who asks hard questions, and you do all the writing yourself.
▌ 02 Is it better to study in Paris (or any capital) for a MiM?
Short answer: it helps for some goals, but the rankings don't reward postcodes and the costs add up fast.

Rent is half the budget, which is why the city you pick matters so much. In that example, around €150 of housing aid brings the total down to roughly €580.
⚠ HEADS-UP FOR NON-EU STUDENTS
Since 1 July 2026, students from outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland without a French means-tested scholarship can no longer claim APL. Apprentices, students on professionalization contracts and students in paid employment are exceptions. If that's you, budget without the aid.
- Target job in one specific capital? --> Check placement data for that city, not the campus address.
- Planning part-time work during term? --> A capital helps. So does a cheaper city where you need less income.
- Program has a gap year, apprenticeship or exchange? --> You'll spend months off campus, so location matters less.
Fits you if: you pick the program and placement record first, and treat the city as a budget and lifestyle decision.
▌ 03 Who should write my recommendation letter for a Master in Management?
Short answer: the person above you who has seen your work up close. Title comes second.
Admissions experts agree that knowing you well and giving specific examples matters most. Seniority counts relative to you (a supervisor beats a peer), but a CEO who met you twice can't write the letter a daily supervisor can.

Notice the pattern: strong letters contain a situation, an action and a result. Only someone who watched you work can write them.

- Don't write the letter yourself, even if they offer. It will sound like your essays.
- Don't let them hand it to AI. Same problem, and it breaks many schools' rules.
- Most programs ask for two or three letters, and a mix of academic and professional voices works well.
Fits you if: you'd rather have one detailed story from your internship manager than one famous signature.

▌ People also ask
Q: Do business schools check essays for AI?
Some say they may use detection software. More often, inconsistencies between your essays, video answers and interview do the work.
Q: Is a MiM in Lyon, Lille or Toulouse respected by employers?
Yes, if the school is. Recruiters look at the school's reputation and placement record, and many of the strongest French schools are outside Paris.
Q: Can a professor from a big lecture write my letter?
They can, but if they only know your grade, the letter will be thin. A professor from a smaller class or your thesis supervisor is usually stronger.
Q: How many recommendation letters does a MiM need?
Usually two or three, but check each program. Some use short online questionnaires instead of full letters.
Don't choose your writing method, your city or your recommenders based on what sounds impressive in a group chat. Choose what an admissions reader, and later a recruiter, will actually believe.
