Hi!
I am seeking admission to a Top 10 MBA, with focus on HBS, Booth, and Sloan. I currently work for a major US airline (Fortune 100 legacy carrier) in a corporate position. I know that the airline industry as a whole is known for its ups and downs, so I was wondering if you have any insight into how admissions officers may view this work experience.
Should I consider seeking another position for a couple years before applying, or will the relative novelty of a lesser represented industry in the applicant pool strengthen my application?

Hey there,
Well it depends a bit on well you have done and where you are and what position you are in. Airline experience is no better or worse than any other service industry I don't think, although when it comes to your industry it will be hard to predict, because it's not all that big enough to carry statistical weight. I mean if your goal is HBS and you can get a McKinsey job, sure, change industries, why not? Other than top consulting firms, PE firms and VC, there is no preferred industry really, and if you are just great at what you do, then it can be enough for any MBA.
Ultimately also, keep i mind that as wonderful as these schools are, they aren't your ultimate goal, so if you are going to change industries it should be in the direction you want (PLUS help you in terms of the MBA as a bonus), and I'd say that consideration is a lot more important.
