I took the GMAT ~ 1 month ago and scored a 610 (V36, Q37, IR 8) and would like to take the exam again. When I prepared for this exam I used the
Manhattan GMAT (Fifth Ed.) and online CAT exams.
To elaborate, I went through the Manhattan Verbal and Quant books ~1.5 years ago and then family and work interfered with me taking the test. When I had some free time (5 weeks), I scheduled the GMAT exam and began taking practice CAT exams. I took 6 in all and have organized the data (i.e. by question type, level of difficult, incorrect vs. correct, time spent, etc.). I plan on reviewing these questions in more detail. All that being said, I feel as if I should have spent more time reviewing the material in the books (i.e. going through the various sections and watching videos) as opposed to taking practice exams.
My goal is for a score between 680 and 720.
I plan on registering for the test in 2.5 months. How should I go about studying and what materials should I purchase? I was thinking about buying the Economist or
Magoosh b/c of the score guarantee.
Hi commodityBull,
From what you have written, I assume that you went through the study material 1.5 years back and this time around just appeared for the CATs.
Yes, your feeling is correct that you should have spent more time reviewing the material in the books.
I would recommend you to sit back and thoroughly analyse your mock CATs. Drill down deep and identify your pain areas.
SC: The questions test various concepts such as S-V agreement, modifiers, parallelism etc. Find out what troubles you.
CR: There might be certain types of questions that are troubling you. May be Assumption, may be conclusion, inference etc.
You need to find that out and then practice them
RC: This again can be drilled down into different types of questions and also different topics. See what questions and topics trouble you the most and then practice accordingly.
As an addition, start preparing an
error log and keep a note of all the mistakes you made and the lessons you learnt from the problems. This will ensure you do not make the same mistake again.
Since you have been studying for long and not seeing any improvement, it might be a good reason to change your mode of studying. You need to build the concepts/fundamentals before you jump in solving the problems. You can do so by choosing one of the following ways:
1. In person classes/private tutoring
2. Online classes
3. Self paced online preparatory course
4. Book heavy approach
