Re: All of the cargo ships of the Blue Star Line are over 100 meters long [#permalink]
All of the cargo ships of the Blue Star Line are over
100 meters long, and all of its passenger ships are
under 100 meters long. Most of the ships of the Blue
Star Line were built before 1980. All of the passenger
and cargo ships of the Gold Star line were built after
1980, and all are under 100 meters long. The
dockside facilities of Port Tropica, which is open only
to ships of these two lines, can accommodate only
those ships that are less than 100 meters long. The
S.S. Coral is a cargo ship that is currently docked at
Port Tropica.

If the statements above are true, which one of the
following must be true on the basis of them?

(A) The S.S. Coral was built after 1980.
Can it be ship before 1980? Before 1980 means that it is not Gold. So it is Blue. But we know that Coral is Cargo --> it is more than 100 metres long ---> it can not be docked at port Tropice ---> means that our assumption (the ship is before 1980) is wrong.
So A.

(B) The S.S. Coral belongs to the Blue Star Line.
Not a fact, it can be a cargo Gold Star ship built after 1980
(C) Port Tropica is served only by cargo ships.
We do not kno it, and moreover, it is irrelevant
(D) Port Tropica is not served by ships of the Blue
Star Line.
Why not? It can be a Blue Star passenger ship that is under 100 metres long
(E) All of the ships of the Blue Star Line are older
than any of the ships of the Gold Star Line.
most is not equal to all, so we can not know it

If the statements above are true, which one of the
following must be true on the basis of them?

(A) The S.S. Coral was built after 1980. CORRECT. it is a cargo ship which has to be less than 100 metres as it is docked at Port tropica. Cargo Ships built before 1980, belonging to Blue Star line are over 100 metres. So S.S Coral can't be of Blue star line. Thus it belongs to Gold Line and hence built after 1980.

(B) The S.S. Coral belongs to the Blue Star Line. INCORRECT.
(C) Port Tropica is served only by cargo ships. can't be assumption.
(D) Port Tropica is not served by ships of the Blue
Star Line. incorrect -- opposite of stated fact.
(E) All of the ships of the Blue Star Line are older
than any of the ships of the Gold Star Line. -- true but the conclusion talks about a particular ship. So, INCORRECT.

It feels like an irregular answer choices below but solved it anyway with the POE method.

(A) The S.S. Coral was built after 1980.
Correct answer. by POI(process of elimination.)
(B) The S.S. Coral belongs to the Blue Star Line.both Blue star and Gold star have ships which are below 100 mtrs. so not true.
(C) Port Tropica is served only by cargo ships.very bold statement without any supporting info.
(D) Port Tropica is not served by ships of the Blue
Star Line.
very bold statement without any support.
(E) All of the ships of the Blue Star Line are older
than any of the ships of the Gold Star Line.
Very bold statement and is without any support so cancel.

Re: All of the cargo ships of the Blue Star Line are over 100 meters long [#permalink]
Blue Star Line ---- A) Cargo Ships = Over 100m B) Pax Ships = Less than 100m || Most built prior to 1980
Gold Star Line --- *ALL* Built after 1980, *ALL* are under 100m.

SS Coral is a cargo ship that is docked at a port that allows for ships with length of only 100m.

Okay, so we know it isn't a blue star line ship and is indeed a gold star line ship.

(A) The S.S. Coral was built after 1980. -- True. If its a gold star line ship, it *must* be built after 1980

(B) The S.S. Coral belongs to the Blue Star Line. -- Not true at all since all cargo ships of blue star line are >100m and the port can't handle ships of length >100m. Eliminate.

(C) Port Tropica is served only by cargo ships. -- We do not know that. Eliminate.

(D) Port Tropica is not served by ships of the Blue Star Line. -- We do not know that. Pax ships from BS Line can still come in and dock. Eliminate.

(E) All of the ships of the Blue Star Line are older than any of the ships of the Gold Star Line. -- We do not know that. Stem says *MOST* of the ships of BS Line are built prior to 1980. Eliminate.
