Project SC Butler: Day 113 Sentence Correction (SC2)

For SC butler Questions Click Here

Although some doctors believe that the drug can have positive effects when taken sporadically, most agree that the medicine is effective only if it is administered in a single, concentrated dose.

(A) only if it is administered in a single, concentrated dose
The use of 'only' and the word 'single' is correct in this option and this option does not seem to have any errors for now. Keep the option for now and look out for a better option if available.

(B) if it was administered only in a single and concentrated dose
The use of the words 'believe' and 'agree' in the original sentence demands for the use of present tense. The use of past tense 'was' in this option makes this option incorrect.

(C) if it would only be administered in a concentrated dose, singly
1. The word 'singly' is an adverb and should conceptually modify a noun/another pronoun. In this option the word does not seem to have a clear referent.
2. The part 'concentrated dose, singly' is unclear and awkward
3. We can also eliminate this for the reason cited by
@sudarshan22

(D) only if it would only be administered in a singly concentrated dose
This option can be eliminated on the basis of the redundant use of the word 'only'

(E) if it is administered only in a dose concentrated singly
In the original sentence the word 'only' modifies the word 'effective' conveying that the medicine is effective only if X happens. Whereas here 'only' modifies administered conveying that the medicine will be effective if administered in a certain way.

This is an if-then error question. Since 'then' portion is not underlined and it is in Simple Present, The If statement must also be in simple present. Hence we can eliminate Options B,C and D.
Option E is eliminated because it distorts the meaning by misplacing 'only'.

generis , Help Required for SC topic!!!

Between Option A & E, why option A is correct ?

(A) only if it is administered in a single, concentrated dose

(E) if it is administered only in a dose concentrated singly

Doubt 1- I have never seen/read about this type of usage of comma as in option A - " single, concentrated" So, i marked it wrong! Shouldn't here "AND" be used instead of comma ?

Doubt 2 - Can you please elaborate on the use of word "ONLY". Is there any specific rule for the use of only. Example - "ONLY" should be used before adjective <= Not sure of this rule ; ust trying to give example.

Thanks & Regards
