What is compared here?

"Iribundi culture" and "any previous archaeological site"

Is there a comparison error in this question?

I think it should be E, because the comparison is made between "the excavation" and "previous" ones. "It" and "its" refer to "the excavation", what's wrong because the same excavation can't take place on two different sites.
Correct me if I'm wrong?

I think sites is the correct usage here.. will go with A
