Well Kilian, you wont have to read my posts on McDonough or Smith so take comfort in that! I went to undergrad in DC so that's already off my list. Unfortunately, I dont have the extra year -- I am getting my MBA because I'm going to be an instructor at West Point and I have to go to grad school this summer. I had a very short flash to bang on this whole process because I got back from a Germany assignment in October and had to have all apps submitted for this year. I know I could absolutely get the scores up -- I am getting my scores up every time I take the GRE, but what I'm finding is that alot of the schools I've applied to...they will take the scores but they wont consider it in my application's review. So, my hopes witth UT Austin and UNC is that the baseline score is already 170 points higher (still low GMAT, about 50 outside of the 80% range) and I will at least be given better consideration than the previous schools. But, you're right -- I am under no dillusion that UNC, UT-Austin, or UVA are safety schools...which is why I am seeking so much feedback so I have many perspectives to take into consideration before I leap in and get my feelings hurt again.

Gotcha - best of luck. Not sure when the due dates are for the current rounds, but maybe you can squeeze in a GMAT before they're due. I found Manhattan GMAT to be extremely helpful and taught me quickly. Maybe take a practice GMAT through GMATPREP and see where your trouble areas are, then focus a few weeks studying there. You've already applied to some schools right? So you should have some essays that you can re-work to fit these schools. As far as the later rounds go, I think someone with your background has a better chance of making an impression on the adcoms over the 500th consultant application they've seen.
I'm just thinking out loud by the way. The people on these boards are extremely helpful, so you're asking in the right place.

Hi C20 - I agree with Kilian...McCombs is NOT a safety school. I think retaking the GMAT would be a good idea, or the GRE, either one. But that does play a factor in your application, so mitigating that score is important. To boost your GPA, have you considered maybe taking a couple of classes at a University Extension? The last suggestion I have is to talk with a consultant, I know Stacey Blackman Consulting is great. They offer an hourly service. They aren't about making you into something that you are not, but they are good about helping you present your best self in the application. After a review of your profile, they could probably make some good suggestions.
