Bummer. Having to decide before 1/3 is a rough spot. I agree w/the previous post that suggested calling. Both sides lose in this scenario. McCombs will undoubtedly lose out on some quality applicants AND you worked hard to get the applications in early enough where a decision could have been reasonably expected.
I obviously thought highly enough of the program to apply, but the overall lack of organization in the admissions process is not representing McCombs well. Of course, some timely admissions could always cure that...
I was very surprised to get my call when I did. All of the other schools I am applying to (with the exception of Stanford, which dinged me today) don't release decisions until the middle of January. Is it Rice that is making you decide by Jan 3?
UNC wants an answer by 1/3. Rice needs an answer by 1/14. I just got an offer from Rice that might be too tough to turn down, specially since I'm already in Houston. Which means I would have a couple of more weeks to make a decision on McCombs. Truth is I should have applied earlier to UT, I just didn't think it would take them this long.

Congrats on the Rice offer. I am in a similar boat myself. I was pretty set on my offer from Emory but Rice gave me an offer that might be hard to turn down which I didn't really expect. Since I want to work in Finance post-grad (in the South/Southwest), Rice might end up being my choice. I was extremely impressed when I visited the school and really liked Houston. After looking at the companies recruiting Rice grads and looking at the compensation numbers, I would say their rankings are unwarranted and recruiters seem to view Rice as more of a school in the high-teens/low-twenties.
So, I got out of my GMAT 4 hours ago and didn't bomb it, so please add my to the McCombs list for R2
I'm actually going to be in Austin from the last week of this month visiting family for the first time. It is my first time visiting Austin so i'm quite excited.

Eat at Parkside on 6th St. You won't be disappointed.
Add me to the rollcall. Submitted application a couple days after the first deadline and interviewed with a local alum on 11/29. The interview was fairly straightforward and conversational. Most questions were stock MBA questions (Why MBA, Why UT, Tell me about your background and goals, Give an example of leading through conflict) and it lasted about an hour. It became increasingly friendly as the conversation progressed, and I think I impressed him at the end with my questions for him. All in all, a good experience. I am still waiting on the final decision.
Got the admit call today at 5pm. Interviewed on 11/29...very surprised to hear back so quickly. Loved Texas and so excited about heading back to Austin.
i've been checking this forum daily and finally decided to join, given today's news...
submitted everything a little before r1 deadline, interview invitation received 12/6, had my interview 12/14, got the call this afternoon that I got in...Austin is sick.
Does anyone know whether McCombs has any Social welfare focussed clubs.? I can't find any on the website
Thanks.

Net Impact is an organization focused on using business to benefit society and social welfare through non-profits, sustainable business practices, micro-finance, etc. McCombs has a chapter, and there's a link under MBA Student Organizations.
This may be sampling error, but it appears that most of the admits don't have finance concentrations (probably the most popular). I guess the committee is still working through that larger applicant base.

I think I'm a special flower--as my approximately average GPA and GMAT clearly suggest.
You're probably right, they did say most folks would get decisions 4-6 weeks later and that most late November interviewee decisions would go out after the New Year.
I received a phone call from Sharon Barrett at 5:40 p.m. on Friday, but she didn't leave me a voicemail. I called back this morning and left her a voicemail, but she instructed me to email the TexasMBA mailbox, which I have done. I'm not sure what else to do. It would be really nice to learn about the status of my application given I have a January 3rd deposit deadline.

Any ideas out there?

You can inform AdCom that you have a deadline on 3rd Jan & ask if decision can be given before that date. Some schools are considerate enough. With McCombs' roll call app, i guess, it should not be a problem.

I left Sharon a voicemail and emailed the TexasMBA mailbox, per her instructions. I spoke with the receptionist from the main MBA admissions phone line, and she wasn't able to help me in this situation. I'm cautiously optimistic that the phone call on Friday was a positive one, but it would be really good to know that for sure, especially since I have a deposit deadline coming up. I don't know if I could skip paying that deposit if I didn't have full confirmation from McCombs.

There's nothing else you can do. Remember, they're working through the 23rd and will have plenty of time to get back to you. If worse comes to worse, pay the deposit at UNC and then make a final decision when you hear back from McCombs.
