Anyone who undertakes the effort to study its nuances has come to realize that, as all languages, the English language is a living, changing organism that cannot be preserved, only described.

A) has come to realize that, as all languages, the English language is a living, changing organism -> as is used for comparing verbs/clauses, But we have noun here. Incorrect.

B) comes to realize that, like all languages are, the English language is a living, changing organism -> "like all languages are" is incorrect.

C) has come to realize that, as all languages do, the English language is a living, changing organism -> Same as A. Incorrect.

D) will come to realize that, like all languages were, the English language is a living, changing organism -> Same as B.

E) will come to realize that, like all languages, the English language is a living, changing organism -> It is better.

So, I think E. :)

My answer is (E). It took me 02:03.

Verb tense is tricky here. I think simple present and simple future tenses are totally fine. For present perfect tense ("has come to realize"), the relative clause may also need to use perfect tense. I am not sure. It turns out that we can eliminate options (A) through (D) via as / like alone.

(A) If "as" is used as a preposition, it typically means "in the capacity of" or "the role or purpose of a person or thing" (See https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/gra ... grammar/as). We don’t use as + noun to mean ‘similar to’. We use like + noun.

(B) "Like" cannot be used as a conjunction.

(C) "as all languages do" should be "as all languages are" to be parallel with "the English language is...".

(D) See (B)

(E) Correctly use "like + noun" to mean ‘similar to’.

Anyone who undertakes the effort to study its nuances has come to realize that, as all languages, the English language is a living, changing organism that cannot be preserved, only described.

like --> to compare nouns
as --> to compare clauses

A, B and D are out

A) has come to realize that, as all languages, the English language is a living, changing organism

B) comes to realize that, like all languages are, the English language is a living, changing organism

D) will come to realize that, like all languages were, the English language is a living, changing organism

Now C vs. E, there is only difference with verb tenses.

C) has come to realize that, as all languages do, the English language is a living, changing organism --> makes no sense to use present perfect tense

E) will come to realize that, like all languages, the English language is a living, changing organism --> correct

I think the comparison is right. "as all languages do" and "the English language is" are parallel.

generis can you explain please.

Can you also clarify the verb tenses? Thanks! :)

Anyone
---------who undertakes the effort to study its nuances
-has come to realize that
-----, as all languages,
-------the English language is a living, changing organism

------------that cannot be preserved, only described.

Error Analysis:
1. SV pairs seem to be fine
2. VT - the way sentence is written - "Anyone" - should be written either in simple present tense or future tense - but this does not appears to be definite error. Lets look for other error
3. "all languages" has been compared with "the English Language" - when "As" is used for comparison, it is generally followed by clause - therefore original sentence has comparison error

A) has come to realize that, as all languages, the English language is a living, changing organism - Comparison Error

B) comes to realize that, like all languages are, the English language is a living, changing organism - when "like" is used for comparison, it is followed by NOUN

C) has come to realize that, as all languages do, the English language is a living, changing organism - here two NOUN are being compared "all languages" and "English Language" - therefore use of "do" is incorrect
- English is not doing any action, Author is just highlighting characteristic of English language

D) will come to realize that, like all languages were, the English language is a living, changing organism
- Like is followed by Clause

E) will come to realize that, like all languages, the English language is a living, changing organism
- Based on the POE, this appears to be CORRECT
- Like is followed by NOUN, Future tense appears to acceptable here
