Some quick answers from last nights chat. I know its sort of hard to decipher, but if you see any of these questions and feel like giving a response, please feel free to do so.
so rhyme, im curious ... what was it about darden that scared you ?
<rhyme>: two phone calls. one alumni, ex goldman, said "its worse than banking" and flatly told me not to go if i was married.
<ninky>: haha
<rhyme>: the other was a girl, who, upon finding out i was married, also told me not to come.
<ACNguy>: what would you guys say is the optimum number of applications to throw out in one round?
<highhopes>: 4
<ninky>: 3 to 4
<rhyme>: id say no more htan 4
<pmenon>: acnguy: ive heard and read 4
Best and worst classes at Booth:
<rhyme>: icarus, best: maybe new venture strategy with schraeger or possiby cases in financial mgmt with Rock (my worst grade there, but it was worth it)... from a non-finance non-strategy purely how do i rock **** out class, I'd say 'managing in organizations' with epley (its a class on the psychology of people and how to manipulate etc). Other good classes might include negotations with caruso.
<rhyme>: Oh, and Stats with bester was surprinsingly good (although not hard)
<rhyme>: Bad: Investments, boring, dry poorly taught. Accounting, ditto. Network Structures of Effective Managment (awful awful awful). INTOPIA (google it, also a disaster). LEAD (a total waste of time and energy)
<ACNguy>: rhyme, with LORs, would you recommend having the same people do all your apps, or get like 4 people with each person only doing a few?
<pmenon>: im getting the same folks to do all my recs
<rhyme>: ACNguy - up to you really. Depends on the person -- keep in mind that its a lot of work, and some people are likely to drag their feet. It's not too much work to repeat the letters for different schools, but realize that the LOR is a lot of work (done right)
<ACNguy>: do you provide recommenders with resumes and any pertinent information/
<pmenon>: im sitting down with mine next week to discuss any questions they have after reading the material i gave them
<billyjeans>: yeah i would
<highhopes>: Yes
<rhyme>: ACNguy, outlines or little 'nudges' help
<ninky>: ACNguy: 1 pg summary of ur goals and reasons for pursuing MBA, and reminder of what u accomplished at work, EC etc
r3racer>: I wondered if anyone might have some advice about how to get the most out of a post-rejection adcom feedback session?
<rhyme>: r3racer, ask for directed feedback - specific things you can do
<pmenon>: river: in talking about kellogg in essays, do you have any advice on what to emphasize
<riverripper>: be honest with yourself about goals and make sure they are realistic
riverripper>: nothing will get you dinged faster in the current job market than saying I want to go from career path X to career path Y if that change is impossible
<pmenon>: so lets say i want to be a career switcher
<Sleepy>: pmenon what I heard back this year was that you need to do research on it
<rhyme>: consulting is the easiest one to break into
<riverripper>: consulting is almost always generalist
<ACNguy>: with the essay analysis that you see on BW and here a lot of times, do you guys recommend using a lot of that advice or does that lead to canned answers and ultimately dings?
<pmenon>: i think a lot of the advice on here is really good
<pmenon>: essay wise
<ACNguy>: about how much time (average) did it take to complete each application?
rhyme>: ACNguy, for me, a LOT honestly. It took me about 1 month per app.
<rhyme>: I got it down to ~3 weeks
<rhyme>: there's just a ton of crap you need to get: LORS, dates of employment, salaries, ideas for your LORs, essay draft 1,2,3,4,5, copies of transcripts, phone numbers of past employers, confirm salaries, double check salaries, etc.
