I am only looking to apply to only the evening MBA program at Georgia Tech.
1) I currently work as an "electronic engineer" for testing, development, and implementation of a federally mandated safety system for Norfolk Southern Corp. Primary roles involve setting up and executing lab and field testing of safety system, working with vendors, other railroads, and other departments within the company, consulting corrections/additions for problems, improvements, or additions, and assistance with various systems/processes touching the system including training new company employees, assisting with training material for transportation operations employees, developing training material for tier 1&2 system support (I will eventually be tier 3), etc. (
I basically must know the technical, operational, and business functionality of North American railroad operations). I trained for 13 months as an electronic operations supervisor, served 3 months as a "floating" electronic operations supervisor, and Jan '13 to now as an office engineer performing my current duties explained above
2) GMAT: IR = 3 (25%), Q = 43 (56%), V = 35 (76%), total scaled score = 640 (72%)
3) Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech)
Major: Electrical Engineering
GPA: 2.62 (Spring 2011')
(endured major oral surgery between sophomore and junior years in which several front teeth were removed/damaged)
4) Lettered all 4 years in D1 swimming at VT; 20+ hours required per week every week throughout college (I was the only EE in ANY sport at VT)
5) No certifications, only passed the FE exam but no PE obtained (not certified, but have completed company training for record keeping, management, professional training, ADI, etc.)
6) Georgia Tech evening MBA program.
7) I plan to either apply in the coming days (Fall '15) or this summer (Spring '16).
8) I aspire to either start my own business (home automation interest #1 now), continue working for the railroad to improve a vital part of the world's economy, or leave the railroad and work for something I view as beneficial to society. Although I learned I enjoy producing and developing software and electronic system at home, I have found myself to be a better asset as a manager and/or director of efforts to complete a technical task (mostly during real-world work experience).
If you believe my chances for an interview are a snowball's chance in Acapulco, I will retake the GMAT. Unfortunately I reverted to my perfectionism tendencies during my GMAT Integrated Reading and Quantitative sections, which amounted to (IMHO) poor results. Ironically, my verbal scored higher than both number-oriented sections, which give me more confidence that I can indeed get a 700+ score if taken again. Please provide guidance whether applying for the approaching Fall semester is warranted, or if applying to the Spring '16 semester after an improved (please give a target number) will be a more viable chance. I have no doubt my three recommendation letters will be outstanding (current direct supervisor, previous manager, current project director), however I would prefer to avoid asking them for two LoR's. Thank you in advance!
