Hi Karan,

It's been about a month since you took your first CAT and posted here:

need-help-regarding-gmat-preparation-through-self-study-or-coaching-218067.html#p1686190

1) What studying have you done since then?
2) Have you taken any additional FULL CATs? How did you score on each (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?
3) Are you still planning to take the GMAT in the early August?

Hello Experts,

I am preparing for GMAT with Target 720+ and looking for executive program since having experience of 5.5+ years now.
I am using Manhattan books for my preparation( self-preparation).

Current strategy: Preparing a topic like Pronoun and doing OG questions with respect to it.

Could you please guide me for approach in critical reasoning and sentence correction area.

Thanks
Karan

Hi Karan,

Taking FULL-LENGTH CATs (with the Essay and IR sections) at regular intervals is an essential part of the study process. If possible, you should plan to take one soon. Once you have that score result, you should post back here. We can then talk through your ongoing study plan and any adjustments that you'll have to make.

one thing I did was to write down ABCDE on the scratch paper for every single question, think all 47 questions, so that I would force myself to do process of elimination just to double check the answer. You have to be fast but if you can spot the flaws in answers quickly, you get the absolute right answer. That is how my verbal was my high. being an engineer, it was a nice surprise.

Hello Rich,

Finally I have taken full length exam this week(not able to give last weekend due to some work)

I got 550 with Quant 39 and verbal 21. (increase in 50 points from last full length exam in May in which I got 500,improved critical reasoning now)

I have to push hard currently following Manhattan books trying to complete syllabus once and doing questions from Official guide.

I have planned to give GMAT exam in the month of August between 15-20.

Please guide for some strategy and methodology.
With the current office situation I can give 4 hrs on weekdays and 6 hrs on weekend.

Hi Karan,

With a Test Date around the middle of August, you would have a little over 2 months of study time. Raising your GMAT score 170+ points during that time will be challenging - not impossible, but definitely tough. If you have the flexibility to push back your Test Date, then that extra study time would likely be quite helpful.

1) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
2) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

Since you already have a study routine in place, you might want to continue working as you have been - then take a new FULL-LENGTH CAT in 2 weeks (or so) so that we can track your progress.

Thanks Rich for your response.I know it will be tough but
Pushing myself hard these days.

1.I am planning to apply in round 1 only.

2.I am targeting Indian colleges like ISB Hyderabad,IIM,MDI gurgaon and singapore college(NSU).

I need guidance to deal sentence correction and reading comprehension,do I need to refer some other material or do more questions.

One more thing is rotation between verbal and quant is really required to make one oriented every time.

Thanks
Karan

Hi Karan,

It's possible that you will need to invest in some new study resources, but we won't know for sure until you study 'your way' for a bit more and take another FULL-LENGTH CAT. Given your Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores on this recent CAT, you will need to make some BIG improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections, so you should make sure to put some practice into each section every week.

@karanvarshney I agree with the poster who does ABCDE and works the essay questions through a process of elimination. That's what I do and it has worked for 16 years. I'm a little cagey about revealing more of my strategy than that :-) for critical reasoning I think that for both question types, meaning inference and s/w/a the most important thing is to paraphrase the question and paraphrase the conclusion. With regards to answer choices I recently did a podcast on inference answers so that might be helpful with regards to CR and RC. You'll find that on my blog where you can download it.
