Like is used to compare nouns here you are giving an example of something
So use such as or Vvhether vvhen you are quoting an example or giving a fevv options

example vvhther its is raining or sunny I vvill still go to church

there are 2 options so you use vvhther /or ...

So

The rarer something becomes.... vvhether X or Y....

This calls paralleled comparison: the more adj (or comparative adj) + clause, the more adj (or comparative adj) + clause.

In this way, only choice (D) and (E) follows this rule: the rarer...., the more avidly.... Between (D) and (E), whether makes the sentence becomes better in the meaning term. "like" in choice (D) cannot be used as the opening term of introducing the examples.

,the more

(the more placed right after the comma shows the contrast)

so, (D) Vs (E)

(D) can be eliminated because of two reasons:-
(i) LIKE is used to compare Nouns.
(ii) " ....be it a baseball card or a musical recording or a postage stamp QUOTES options"
" whether" is used to illustrate options. ( Must Learn if VS whether)

I thought whether can only be used when looking at two options but I could be wrong
