At a certain university, if 50 percent of the people who inquire about admission policies actually submit applications for admission, what percent of those who submit applications for admission enroll in classes at the university?

(1) Fifteen percent of those who submit applications for admission are accepted at the university.

(2) Eighty percent of those who are accepted send a deposit to the university.

I think the OA is D but the OA is E . Not sure how. Can anyone explain

I think the reason you're saying the answer should be D is that you're equating "send a deposit" with enroll. This may not be the distinction made by the question authors, but it's a distinction. I think you see why each individual statement is insufficient or you wouldn't think D is the answer, so moving to the statements togehter.

If 15% of those that send in applications are accepted, and 80% of the 15% send in a deposit, we have 12% of the total applicant pool sending in deposits. Does this tell you anything about how many actually enrolled? What if 2% of these people sending in deposits also get accepted to Stanford and are ready to kiss that deposit good-bye in order to attend Stanford and not this "certain university"? The two statements together do not tell us anythign about actual number that enroll in classes at the university.

Hope this helps.

I had similar answer D. The subtleties of GMAT is so tricky. I even wrote out "% accepted" + "% enrolled" as the requirements for sufficiency. I still thought "sending deposit" would be same as "enrolling." Sloppy.

The authors word the questions like this in order to trick us. I'm not sure the real GMAT does this, but the test prep people sure do. It becomes more about reading than doing the math.
