Are You Up For the Challenge: 700 Level Questions

Beginning => Let there be 100 people => 30 with liberal and 70 with non liberal values
End of the year => Population grew by 12% that means there are 112 people and liberal values population decreased by 5% that mean it is 25 % now
Therefore, Of 112 people there are 28 people with liberal values and 84 people with non-liberal values

% Increase = $$\frac{New - Initial }{ Initial }$$ = $$\frac{84-70}{70}$$ = $$\frac{14}{70} = 20%$$

But there is no option for 20%

If I use % Increase = $$\frac{New - Initial }{ New}$$=$$\frac{84-70}{84}$$= $$\frac{14}{84} ~= 17%$$ which is Answer E. But I wonder if I can take a new value in the denominator.

Need help!!

I am trying to solve it for some time and I have the same problem. But i dont think it is possible to divide by the new when they ask for the percent increase from start to finish.
