At the beginning of the year in town X, 30% of the population had liberal values. At the end of the year the total population had grown by 12% and the proportion of the population with liberal values had decreased by 5%. From the beginning of the year to the end of the year what was the approximate percent increase in the number of people in town x with non-liberal values?

A. 9%

B. 10%

C. 12%

D. 15%

E. 17%

Are You Up For the Challenge: 700 Level Questions

Beginning => Let there be 100 people => 30 with liberal and 70 with non liberal values
End of the year => Population grew by 12% that means there are 112 people and liberal values population decreased by 5% that mean it is 25 % now
Therefore, Of 112 people there are 28 people with liberal values and 84 people with non-liberal values

% Increase = \(\frac{New - Initial }{ Initial }\) = \(\frac{84-70}{70}\) = \(\frac{14}{70} = 20% \)

But there is no option for 20%

If I use % Increase = \(\frac{New - Initial }{ New} \)=\( \frac{84-70}{84} \)= \( \frac{14}{84} ~= 17% \) which is Answer E. But I wonder if I can take a new value in the denominator.

Need help!!

I am trying to solve it for some time and I have the same problem. But i dont think it is possible to divide by the new when they ask for the percent increase from start to finish.
