Because it was long thought that few people would watch lengthy televised political messages, most televised political advertisements, like commercial advertisements, took the form of short messages. Last year, however, one candidate produced a half-hour-long advertisement. During the half hour the advertisement was aired, a substantial portion of the viewing public tuned into the advertisement. Clearly, then, many more people are interested in watching lengthy televised political messages than was previously thought.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

(A) The candidate’s ratings improved significantly as a result of the half-hour-long political advertisement.

(B) Political advertisements have become increasingly influential in determining voters’ decisions at the polls.

(C) Many people would appreciate the opportunity to become better acquainted with political candidates’ views on current political issues.

(D) Most people who are interested in political issues watch television regularly.

(E) Most of the viewers who tuned in to the candidate’s half-hour-long advertisement last year did not change channels after the first few minutes.

A. The candidate’s ratings improved significantly as a result of the half-hour-long political advertisement.--- not justifying the conclusion
B. Political advertisements have become increasingly influential in determining voters’ decisions at the polls.--- again same explaination
C. Many people would appreciate the opportunity to become better acquainted with political candidates’ views on current political issues. --- well people will show more intrest in knowing a candidate, but are they really using only advertisement for this, ambiguous !
D. Most people who are interested in political issues watch television regularly.--- again not making things clear.
E. Most of the viewers who tuned in to the candidate’s half-hour-long advertisement last year did not change channels after the first few minutes.--- people seems to be intrested in candidates half hour long ad., but again its last yr.

quiet confused between C and E.

still E seems a better option then C.

E?

Flipping channels does not show viewers interest in watching programs.

E since that is the only one that talks about length of the commerical and people maintaining an interest inspite of the length, which is what the argument is about.

Whats the OA. I like E, but I'm also kinda curious if it could be A. Just because more people watched the broadcast doesn't mean it was positive. Should we assume that b/c more people watched it, the ratings went up???

A - out of scope (ratings never mentions in CR).
B - out of scope (not discussed in CR)

Clear E - as it specifies who ever tuned in stayed with ad until the end.

i was bit confused between C and E, but finally E as it is an appropriate assumption for the conclusion, if we will negate E argument will fell apart

I vote for E, and it seems that is the correct answer by popular decision, but can we get an OA?!?

I think it should be E, it assumes people watched the program and didn't change channels.

My views:
Assumption - People who tuned into politcal advertisements are always intereted in watching the same...i didnt understand any of the answer choices so picked randomly C....please help!

E: This elimantes the possibility that the TV wasn't just on and people weren't actually watching the show.

Yes, you are correct. E should be the answer. The question itself says " Last year, however, one candidate.....". So, that brings more sense to E.

As pointed out by manasdash1 - E connect the statistics of the previous year to the event of the previous year. "Last year" is a key word in the argument stem, a perspective defining keyword indeed! CR does indeed need an eye for detail. Lesson learnt!

E. If it were not true, the argument would completely fall apart. Not true for the other answers.

PREMISE :- Because it was long thought that few people would watch lengthy televised political messages, most televised political advertisements, like commercial advertisements, took the form of short messages. Last year, however, one candidate produced a half-hour-long advertisement. During the half hour the advertisement was aired, a substantial portion of the viewing public tuned into the advertisement.

CONCLUSION :- Clearly, then, many more people are interested in watching lengthy televised political messages than was previously thought.

Assumption :- Most of the viewers who tuned in to the candidate’s half-hour-long advertisement last year did not change channels after the first few minutes.

Answer is E
If someone has to air longer programme then they must be sure that people will watch it instead of either switching channel after few minutes or keeping TV while doing something else. If either of these happens then its clear tat people are not interested after few minutes. So assumption has to be that people will not switch channel after few minute and also will not just keep the TV ON while doing something else.

Kudos please, if it helped.
