Hi D can't be the answer because it has not resolved one issue that there "the number of financially successful magazines in Country A is greater than ever. While C correctly resolve that, it is because of number of circulation these magazine depends, these give us accurate answer.

Re: Because of the recent recession in Country A most magazines published [#permalink]
Because of the recent recession in Country A most magazines published there have experienced decreases in advertising revenue, so much so that the survival of the most widely read magazines is in grave doubt. At the same time, however, more people in Country A are reading more magazines than ever before, and the number of financially successful magazines in Country A is greater than ever.

Which one of the following, if true, most helps to resole the apparent discrepancy in the information above?

(A) Most magazines reduce the amount they charge for advertisement's during a recession. - WRONG. So what!! Does not help.

(B) The audience for a successful television show far exceeds the readership of even the most widely read magazine. - WRONG. Palin irrelevant.

(C) Advertising is the main source of revenue only for the most widely read magazines; other magazines rely on circulation for their revenue. - CORRECT. Hits bulls eye.

(D) Because of the recession, people in Country A have cut back on magazine subscriptions and are reading borrowed magazines. - WRONG. Just does the opposite of what is expected out of it. Cutting back subscriptions not only reduces subscription revenue but also advertising revenue, indirectly, as well. Thus, contradicts the passage.

(E) More of the new general interest magazines that were launched this year in Country A have survived than survived in previous years. - WRONG. So many assumptions need to be made for this to work. Are new magazines well read or can it they be counted? Most importantly this option just takes into account recent magazines, thus not at all helping understand why the situation(discrepancy) is like that in the passage.

Answer C.

A little tip--it helps to explain your reasoning, so that we know how to help. Why do you think A 'looks more relevant?' What is your understanding of the passage and the answer choice? By writing this out, you'll help us see how to help you. You also might find that you catch where your reasoning has gone awry.

Here, we're trying to explain how seemingly contradictory things can be true. What are those things?

1). Several of the most widely read magazines might fail soon because advertising revenue is down.

2). In general, more people are reading magazines than ever before.

3). There are more financially successful magazines than the country has ever had.

How could this be?

Well, we need an answer that shows why some magazines are doing great, even as some of the most widely read magazines are failing.

Answer A says: Most magazines reduce the amount they charge for advertisement's during a recession.

*Maybe* this could explain how there could be 'more financially successful magazines' in the country-- as in, maybe they are lowering their advertising prices and therefore, actually, getting more money! The old "lower prices but sell a lot more" strategy. But... then why are *the most widely read magazines failing?*

Also--we are explicitly told that "most magazines have experienced decreases in advertising revenues." So it's not reasonable to suspect that lowering advertising prices is leading to 'more financially successful magazines' than ever before. Most magazines are losing advertising revenues.

Answer C explains what we need to best.

The most wide read magazines rely on advertising revenue, and since that is down, they are hurting. Many other magazines, however, *don't* rely on advertising for their revenue--they rely on circulation. Well, since so many people are reading magazines, the magazines that rely on circulation could be doing quite well, but ones that rely on advertising are hurting. C does everything we need the answer to do.

A is actually irrelevant.

From the passage, we know that the correct answer MUST mention some other (i.e., not advertising) source of revenue. This is an absolute necessity because part of the "discrepancy" is that more magazines are FINANCIALLY successful despite falling advertising revenue, a pair of findings that can only be reconciled if there are additional sources of revenue in play.

Moreover, even in the area of advertising revenue, choice A provides no value. What matters is only whether revenues have gone up or down, a question that's already settled in the prompt (they've gone down). Choice A tells us one possible reason why revenues may have taken a hit, but the underlying reasons don't speak to discrepancies involving the actual bottom-line numbers on the balance sheet.
