In the 1st question explanation it is said that it is an "An evaluation question. What is the purpose of mentioning Hesiod at the end of Para 5? The author describes Hesiod as ―intermediate between oral Homeric Greece and fully developed Greek literacy,‖ and immediately before says that ―the more sophisticated orally patterned thought is, the more likely it is likely to be marked by set expressions skillfully used. Paraphrase all this: Hesiod is an example of an oral culture that produced sophisticated thought in sophisticated patterns. (B)paraphrases this."

But if he is intermediate between oral Homeric Greece and fully developed Greek literacy then he should be an example of internediate of oral and fully developed greek literacy. Pls help anyone.

Hi Justdoit2019,

Hesiod is an intermediate between oral Homeric Greece and fully developed Greek literacy, means that he was a product of culture midway between the oral and the written, and thus an example of how sophisticated thought is produced in sophisticated patterns. This implication is again drawn from his work: quasiphilosophic material in the formulaic verse forms.

Hope This Helps.
Thanks.

Second para is what Plato believe, not what according to author. I don't see author making any point like - "extensive versus limited reliance on memory.". Author mentioned clearly that's what Plato says, and cannot be interpreted as "According to the author". Moreover, yes it is mentioned in the last passage that one need to think in mnemonic pattern, but cannot infer it means extensive reliance.

2. According to the author, an important difference between oral and literate cultures can be expressed in terms of:

A. extensive versus limited reliance on memory.
B. chaotic versus structured modes of thought.
C. simple versus complex use of language.
D. barbaric versus civilized forms of communication.
E. presence and absence of books

Para 1 - Alien nature of writing
Para 2 - Plato's critique of writing
Para 3- How writing helps in development of thought process. [Now my understanding is that it is not about human consciousness. Consciousness is self awareness, not development of thoughts]
Para 4 - How writing helps development in human consciousness
Para 5 - Oral tradition.

I don't get how E is credited as an answer. How writing has influence human "consciousness" is discussed only in para 4. B looks better to me.

4. The passage is primarily concerned with

A. criticising those who speak against ̳writing‘
B. emphasising the importance of writing
C. assert that writing and consciousness are independent of each other
D. documenting the negative effects of writing
E. discussing how writing has influenced human consciousness
