I prefer E over C because the it antecedent in choice C can point to both "the Chinese empire" and "The great wall".

I don't see why E is worse.

OA: E
All other options other than E & C are out because of misplaced modifier. Withstanding should refer to Great Wall of China
Between E & C, E is better as by preposition is not apt from in E makes more sense. Also the C option has its which ambiguously could refer to either Chinese empire or Great Wall
Hence E is the better one

(A) the northern borders of the Chinese empire were protected by the Great Wall of China from intrusions by various nomadic groups for centuries after its construction Incorrect because northern borders were not built to withstand the attack.

(B) the Chinese empire’s northern borders were protected by the Great Wall of China from intrusions by various nomadic groups for centuries after its construction Incorrect because northern borders were not built to withstand the attack.

(C) the Great Wall of China protected the northern borders of the Chinese empire from intrusions by various nomadic groups for centuries after its construction

(D) for centuries after they were constructed, the Great Wall of China protected the northern borders of the Chinese empire from intrusions by various nomadic groups Incorrect because of presence of back to back modifiers

(E) the Great Wall of China protected the Chinese empire’s northern borders from various nomadic groups’ intrusions for centuries after being constructed Incorrect

Kindly help.

IMO it should be E. "It's" ambiguity.
And the explanations for C are more based on how it sounds right/E sounds wrong.

IF the answer is C can you please provide a more logical way to eliminate the option E/choose option C

Built to withstand the attack of small arms such as swords and spears, the northern borders of the Chinese empire were protected by the Great Wall of China from intrusions by various nomadic groups for centuries after its construction.
