I think it depends on which recruiter you are talking about. Which finance recruiter would rank Stanford that low? Some local recruiter may be. No Bank, PE or VC would say that...

A few examples:

NYU 15th in Finance (behind USC)
Yale 34th in Finance
Stanford 29th in Finance
Tuck 18th in GM (Behind Thunderbird)
Team Fuqua 10th in teamwork

This is just what I found in 2 minutes

As part of BusinessWeek's 2008 MBA ranking, corporate recruiters at more than 500 of the companies that hire the most graduate business students were asked to provide their opinions on which schools produce the strongest graduates in functional areas such as marketing, global business, accounting, and communication skills.

Perhaps the rankings aren't ranking the schools themselves. Rather, they are rating the quality of its graduates.

Just because you have the latest Super computer, it doesn't mean it is going to deliver "super" results if the user of the computer can not bring out the best of its abilities.

Therefore, perhaps we should debate this. Maybe for these specialties, these school adcoms are best in identifying potential successful candidates for their schools.

After all, some top MBA programs do enroll some questionable candidates.

Trojan network is pretty damn strong in So Cal.

Luke-warm elsewhere.

Regarding the career services, I bet it is a matter of how outgoing/helpful they are. In that case, I'm not surprised to see some top schools ranked a little lower (Wharton, HBS).

Is there a reason social enterprise isn't listed as a specialty? (Or maybe I just missed it?) I know a lot of other rankings consider that a specialty. It's a bit disappointing, particularly when BW ran a whole article about the fact that more and more students are interested in social enterprise.
