got my "final decision rendered"

result: deferred !?!?!?!

my initial response: @!#$%

but now that i've had some time to gather myself and let it sink in, do any of you have advice on how to proceed?

the next step is to send an email w/ a letter confirming that I'd like to stay in consideration. from what I've read on blogs, this letter can be up to two pages long, but that seems like overkill via email. do i send as an attachment? a short 5 sentences?

any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

I'm sorry to hear this. I would hang tight for a few more days and keep brainstorming about how to proceed. It's not likely to make a difference whether you send them a note today or a week from now. You are definitely still in the mix at CBS... being deferred from ED is about equivalent to being waitlisted at other schools in Round 1.

submit: 9/12
printing: 9/15
under review: 9/17
interview invite: 10/6
interview date: 10/14
interview complete: 10/23
final decision: 10/28

for those who submitted towards the end, i wouldn't read too much into timing. from looking at previous year stats, it seems like adcom receives a TON of apps toward the end, so it probably takes them longer to sort through everything.

just relax, don't get too worried. it's out of your hands now, you've done all you can.
good luck.

I'm an R1 applicant and my status changed to this today:

"Your application will be put under review on January 6, 2010."

Is there any particular significance to that? Or is that just standard for R1 applicants?

Pook,

i think since you applied after ED, they will start looking at your file once they are done dealing with ED apps.

RD applicant here, I see the same message on mine. Probably standard is my guess.

Two links I thought I'd share with everyone:

CBS Events Calendar -- This should give you a really good idea of the kind of events, recruiters, and speakers that come through campus all the time. Jamie Dimon (CEO of JPMorgan Chase) came at the beginning of October. Craig Newmark (Founder of Craigslist) came a few days ago.

I attended an info session at CBS last week and the admissions office said:

35-40% interview
~16% admitted

And that no candidate is admitted without an invitation to interview.

Hi all,

Congratulations to all the admitted students! and good luck to all the people who are still waiting to hear.

I have a question for the admitted students: Did you guys have to go through a Kroll check? if so, can you share some details on how it's performed and the timing of this?

If not, do you know if Columbia uses the Kroll check on all the admitted students? and how/when is it done?

Thank you

All admitted students to CBS have to go through a Kroll check. However, Kroll checks have not started yet so I am not familiar with the exact process. Kroll checks will become available in early January.

Hey,

I have just started putting together my RD application and have a quick question:

The CBS application asks for two recommendations, which I've asked my current manager and former manager to submit. However, a close personal relation, who is a CBS alum, would like to submit a personal recommendation on my behalf - does CBS have an allowance for this? Also, would such a recommendation actually help my cause?

Any insight on the issue would be much appreciated.

cesc4,

I believe the "official recommendations" should come from two people in your professional experience, and definitely one of them should be from a current or former supervisor. Now, if you are certain that the two managers will write good recommendations for you, that should be your best choice. But if you are not, then you can consider other options like what you've mentioned.

Either way, i think having an CBS alumni send a letter of support independently of the application package may help too (and certainly can't hurt). Although exactly how much the adcom weighs this extra piece of information I do not know.

hi all - on the team failure essay , are you'll staying iwthin the 500 word recommendation or extending? Any advise from those who have been accepted?
Also if you are using only 500 words what % have you spent on "if given a second chance what would you have done..." ?

thanks!
