I like the idea of the Toigo fellowship, but it sucks to have to pay $50 to apply.

On the other hand, they are giving out 50 fellowships and may not even have gotten that many applicants. If you get a Consortium fellowship and the Toigo fellowship, will the school cut you a 10k check?

Edit: Nope

Quote:
I was recently awarded a full tuition Consortium fellowship. Is there a way for me to still be a Toigo Fellow?

Yes, but as a Consortium fellow you will be considered an UNFUNDED Toigo Fellow. You will need to discuss how the funding would work with your admissions or financial aid representative, because the Toigo grant is only applicable toward tuition. In addition, we ask that you identify yourself as a “Toigo Fellow and Consortium scholarship recipient.” You will benefit 100% from the services Toigo offers, and, as a member of the Consortium, you will have access to its events as well.

Where did you get the $10,000 from? Aren't the Toigo scholarships $2,500?

Ah, I confused the Toigo fellowship with one of the other Consortium fellowships.

Well, it's been said before, but it's the easiest thing to see so i guess people keep falling back to it. GMAT/GPA check one box - academics. and it kind of falls into 1. would struggle in class (theory). 2. Can handle class (theory). 3. would excel in class (theory).

Majority of folks fall into can handle class - say 650-730ish (obviously not hard limits). It all checks the SAME box. And even when you get the 780-790 would excel in class, it's still only checking academics. They really do look at other things.

I just feel like there's always a lot of, you got a 790 and got dinged everywhere and this person had a 650 and got a full ride to Wharton - how is that possible?

Many parts make up the whole and sometimes the other parts compensate for the academics and sometimes they detract. If you got a 750 and got denied everywhere, you know it's not because your academics were not good so it doesn't make sense to retake it and hope for a 790. There's something about the other part of you that they are not buying.

Honestly, that's why i didn't retake the GMAT - i personally wanted to break 700 for the psychological pat on the back i'd give myself but decided it made more sense to focus on other things since 680 is high 80th percentile and shows i can handle the work.

I feel like the GMAT should be an opportunity for people to differentiate themselves. For example, you may be a teacher or work with kids at a nonprofit or something, and it may be very hard to demonstrate quantifiable success. I think it is easier to show results in a corporate structure, ie a promotion from specialist to manager, etc... But the nonprofit employee could have a wonderfully positive impact on the lives of a few, but it is tough to articulate that on a resume. In a perfect world that person would be able to demonstrate excellence by crushing the exam!
Anyway, it is safe to say that I am a little biased!

I agree that the GMAT is great at normalizing a lot of academic performance measurements, and is really optimized for the kind of thinking you need to do in b-school (simple problems obfuscated with lots of extraneous information). But yeah, don't anyone kill yourself over it if you've done your best. Performance as you reach the ends of the scale is hard to measure, and there are lots of reasons people can do badly that in no way reflect intelligence.

Very true. Not that a 760 is that great but I went from 670 to 760 in a little over two months. Same dude...

I still think I may have gotten someone else's score or there was a computer malfunction. :(

i agree with you.

In this case, the person is compensating for the WE they are looking for with a high gmat score.

and  on your comment about your GMAT score. Very good point on you being the same person with 2 GMAT scores and no personality transformation

I have stopped trying to speculate any further on this stuff. There is no clear indication of what works and what doesn't. Even if you are a URM with good scores across the board and good work experience and an interesting story it doesn't guarantee a thing. The only thing I would change going back would be to drop the money and get an admissions consultant. Maybe it was me being arrogant thinking I can do it myself. I kind of resent consultants because it is another avenue that gives a leg up to those who have deeper pockets than others. The playing field to graduate school already isn't level and consultants exacerbate things. I have seen some seemingly "par for the course" people have a ton of success using consultants. Back to work on these applications...

Just received this email from Kelley about the Consortium

Quote:
You may be curious as to the next steps in relation to Consortium membership and fellowship. As a reminder, information pertaining to Consortium membership and fellowship will be sent directly from the Consortium during the week of March 19 a nd will not be included in your admission packet. We realize this is a time of anxiety but look forward to sharing more news with you soon. We hope that you are able to join us for Kelley Experience Weekend (April 17-19) and are excited to welcome you to the Kelley family!

I received the same email yesterday. You know what else came? My welcome package from Kelley...In with a full National Society of Hispanic MBA student Merit Fellowship Award (to be replaced with the Consortium Fellowship Award if it is indeed offered)! :wave

Needless to say, my wife and I are dealing with a bit of a hangover today.

I'm up for having to make a tough decision then. My brother is finishing up at Kelley this year, so I know the merits of their program really well.

At least this takes the edge of anxiety and self doubt out of the equation for the next week or two.

Good luck to everyone else.

Nooooooooooooo stay away from consultants. Unless you have some reason that you struggle with writing effectively (and I know there are many reasons that this could be the case) consultants will stack you up with 20 other applicants. They will put in a good effort until they get your money, and then they will churn out sloppy, ineffective writing so they can collect the fee from you and all the other people. I have never dealt with a group of more arrogant and unscrupulous opportunists in my life.

There is one lady I worked with who is really great named Kaneysha Grayson.

The bottom line is that you know your story better than anyone else, and you are more vested in your story than anyone else. There are tons of great people to talk to and tons of great ins to read that can serve as points of inspiration for how to tell your tale.

I agree with this, 100 percent. No one will ever know your story like you. However, if you feel you need support in articulating that story and someone with a writing background (a consultant, a friend, a mentor or former teacher, whomever) can help in that way, seek that help if you think it'll make a difference. There really is no magical formula to this process. There are insights we can all glean, and some consistencies when it comes to applying to certain schools year after year, but that's about it.

The one thing we can ALL do is know that whatever happens, we did our best. We all spent hours studying, hundreds (or thousands) of dollars visiting schools and paying for app fees, slaving over essays and shaking one too many hands while collecting too many business cards. That's the gift and the curse of this process - it's hard work, but it is good work to do as practice for beasting the business world in the future.

I wouldn't take back the TWO years I've spent in this process for anything (I would gladly take back all of the money I spent, tho. I could've spent that money on a trip or shoes or something. #sideeye) We learn and grow while applying to business school, not just while attending business school, and I think that's pretty cool. It's like a bonus to have this opportunity to be self-reflective, something we don't always get a chance to do during our busy working lives.

So, let's all try to be super thankful this week that we are even afforded the opportunity to be in this graduation school process. We are all very fortunate.

Here's to those admits coming down the pipeline this week!!! :punk

I feel you on this, but it's not over! The draft hasn't even happened yet, and there is still time for you to get into your dream school! If you spent all this time worrying about getting into Tuck and you find out this week that you got in, you're gonna be mad that you wasted that energy doubting yourself. Don't do it. Positive talk only, man!

The Universe is out there conspiring, and you're gonna get what you deserve! And we're all rooting for you that what's coming to you will be a big, fat acceptance package from Tuck. Just hold on a little while longer! :-D
