CBS, in addition to some other schools such as Yale SOM, Booth, and Duke Fuqua, uses an applicant tracking system that handles all aspects of the admissions process including the application itself and correspondence with candidates.

The lesson learned is that make sure to click any links in the emails you get from the schools and otherwise show interest, because these systems keep track of how engaged you seem.
