solaris....I am confused about whether the Cornell AMBA program, if I get in, or Duke would be better for me, especially given that the economy is bad and may not recover in time for AMBA graduates next year. What do you folks think? target area: strategy/general management

msday86, where's our interview debrief? :-D

Sorry sorry, I just recovered all the sleep I lost thanks to my 21-hour day traveling to/from Cornell. I officially hate air travel now.

Cornell was really great. The interview was fairly standard:

1. Take us through your resume.
2. Why MBA? Why Cornell? Why now?
3. What other schools did you apply to?
4. Tell us about a time you failed.
5. How will you adjust to Ithaca?

I think I did OK...it was my first interview, so I rambled a bit at the start, but then recovered nicely enough. I'd probably give myself a B+ if we were grading our own interview performances (why don't we do that anyway??)

Interesting. So if you don't mind, how did you answer "Why now?" as an early-career candidate?

Also, how did you answer the "What other schools did you apply to?" question? I'm curious because I know that Cornell really wants people that want to go to Cornell.

Thank you, +1!

The "failure" and "what other schools" questions seem to be asked pretty consistently. I'm sure you did pretty well though, msday86.

Spideyeclipse27, IMO you need to think about whether a two-year program wouldn't give you a bit more in terms of marketable skills and general business knowledge. Especially, if you're considering switching industries.

Moreover, isn't Duke's EA round "binding?"

other than the usual questions (resume, why mba, career goals, leadership, teamwork etc) some of the Cornell specific questions I have seen consistent over the past 3 yrs or so and across candidates is:

What are your (3) qualities u'd like the adcom to know ?
Which other school are u applying to? Why is Cornell a better fit? Whts common/dissimilar between school X and Cornell?
What do you like/dislike about working in teams?
Impact on Organization ( essay 2 revisited)
ECs and how it relates to background

can we keep adding to this list? (cornell specific only)

I used this to show that I had researched Cornell and my career goals well and listed schools that were in line with both of those things. My interviewer seemed impressed at my list of choices.

I would be careful saying a school like Wharton, because it is going to make them feel like a backup. So choose schools in the same range that can offer a similar experience like Tuck, Yale etc.

Hey guys,

Just wondering if any of you know what the Thursday post-class drinking event at Cornell is called? I thought it was TNDC, but I'm not sure if that was the name of the Cornell event or not? Too much beer during MBA visits :beer.

For the transcript spreadsheet, if the course title is longer than the cell, are we supposed to type the full name of the course (and run outside of the cell) or abbreviate the course name?

Wondering if anyone has asked. If not, I guess I'll have to call tomorrow... too bad we can't just scan the 'scripts.

We discussed this a few pages earlier in this very thread! You can upload a PDF scan of your transcript in lieu of that terrible Excel template.

And so it starts snowing the morning of my Johnson interview. Is that a sign or what?
Here's a shot of Sage Hall from my room. Purdy!
