The endless wait for Darden to revert (had my interview for this dream school on Dec. 7th)... about 4 weeks to go, with results expected by 12th Jan.
Anyone with similar anxieties? Any recommendations for steps to be taken / interaction needed that could give me an edge?

Besides Darden, have received admits from
1) Wash U in St. Louis (Olin) with a half-tuition waiver Dean's scholarship (worth $45,000 approx)
2) Boston U mba with a $60,000 Dean's prize scholarship

Profile:
GMAT: 740 (AWA 6.0), GPA: 3.47 (from mediocre engg. colg. in India), TOEFL: 111
Work-ex: 3 yrs in adv/mkt (with O&M for tech client) + 1 yr as software engg (Infosys)
Extra-currics & social work: Impressive

I ask for help in deciding between these two safe schools... MBA in Brand Management, manufacturing/technology industry is my focus. From an MBA in Brand Management for my desired industry point-of-view BU (US News #31) seems to be winning - but WUSTL wins hands-down in terms of rankings for mba program (US News #19) and also university rankings (US News #13). The 2 are quite well-matched in placement statistics...

Do you have GC or US citizenship? Because without this you cannot be a brand manager in US, or even asst. brand mgr for that matter. Manufacturing is not in US it's in China; what you see in US is supply chain and assembling units and of course product designs. Technology industry is a good one...you can be a product manager later on.

I heard in some movie...facts can be misleading! So don't go by rankings. If I were you, I would go to BU.

A friend at INSEAD got job in Phillips and a $100K student loan to pay off. A friend in BU got job in Phillips and he is debt free.

Count me in for Rd1. I had a question about the essays -since neither of the 2 essays asks for long/short-term goals specifically, are you guys alluding to them in essay 1 or 2?
The questions are undoubtedly tough...

I think you can slip in your career progression part in the first essay and somehow show how that along with your EC make u an ideal fit for Darden

For the second essay..its all abt Post MBA plans. The world economy is in the dumps, there is more oil than water in the atlantic..These things have affected you..how have they changed you? BUt most importantly you need to mention what impact these events had on your post MBA career goals!

Just to share, I attended the Open House on 13 September. There was a session with Sara Neher, director of admissions at Darden, and she addressed this slightly. She advised that they are looking for our career goals in the elevator pitch (you willl find that somewhere in the personal details section of the application), while they are looking more for our thinking process and personality (basically who we are) from the 2 essays. Though most of us at the Open House found the space give for elevator pitch (150 words) too little to describe our career goals, Sara believed it should be sufficient.

Nonetheless, I guess it should be alright/good if you can squeeze your goals into the essays, if you can fit all that within the 500 word limit for each essay.

Hope this helps :)[/quote]

Hi. I want to major in Finance and Entrepreneurship. Post mba i want to join my father's business (rolling mill plant - manufacturing) and expand it. How should i approach the elevator question? Any advise or suggestions because i am really confused?

According to you, it seems that the fulltime employment stat for Class of 2010 is less than impressive? It is quite a shame for many other top schools have published quite an impressive recovery this year in their employment reports. Does anyone have an idea why Darden is behind in terms of getting their graduates jobs?

I was a prospective student, but am a bit put off by their employment stats. I contacted the career office and they replied that results are released at the end of January, but she did provide a list (after several emails) of the top hires for class of 2010. Hope this helps:

COMPANY - # of HIRES
IBM Global Business Services 11
Bank of America 8
Bain & Company, Inc. 7
Johnson & Johnson 6
Wells Fargo Securities 6
Accenture 5
Citi 5
Danaher Corporation 5
Goldman, Sachs & Co. 5
Marsh & McLennan Companies (MMC) 5
Credit Suisse 4
Dell, Inc. 4
JPMorgan 4
McKinsey & Co. 4
Microsoft Corp. 4
ZS Associates 4

And these are the figures for all the students. Thinking about international students, it can be worse. For example, J&J and IBM don't hire internationals. BAC and others can't hire them because of TARP constraints. Also, this is just 30% of the class. So the remaining 70% of the class gets hired by not-so-impressive companies?

I believe it is just the standard breakout sorted by # of hires... so if a company didn't hire 4 or more, then they didn't make the list. These stats were reported by BW about a month ago. Other stats for the latest round of recruiting can also be found there.

So I just got a decision this morning saying I will not be offered admission. I am really surprised as notification date is not until Jan 12th. I must have done something terribly wrong as it seems like I was a clear reject, they did not even wait till notification date. Either ways, my first reject of the season.

I'm sorry to hear that :( I hope the rest of your apps go better, it's definitely been a hard couple of years for MBA admissions with the recession, and more people going back to school

Hopefully no offense, but could you post a post-mortem of sorts? gmats and gpa, perhaps, to give some feedback of their decisions?

Again, sorry to hear this, and good luck for the rest!

I'm sorry to hear that, Neo.

I finally received an interview invite this morning. I've been accepted to the other two schools I'm pursuing, but Darden was my top choice from the beginning.

My GMAT is 710 (q 50 v 35) AWA 5.5
GPA is 3.24 from a Top 10 US Engineering Program
Work Experience is in Oil Equipment Manufacturing Industry of 3 years at matriculation
International Work Experience, Decent Extracurriculars and Community Service as well.
Wanted to get into consulting

that's just eerie, my credentials pretty much mirror yours....(3.22 in ChemE, 3 yrs. manufacturing experience, 710 gmat)

Darden's my "reach" school, but I think I might have a better shot at Georgetown. Have you heard back from anywhere else?

I dont feel confident about Ross as well, I have not received an interview invite from them. At this point, I am really not sure what kind of schools I should be applying to for R2, I don't know how high or low to aim at. With my confidence taking some beating, I am thinking about UC Irvine or schools outside the Top 50, but then again, I dont want to miss out on getting into a better program. But I am somewhat lost at the moment.

email says a decision notification is there, please go to following link to view updated status. The link basically takes you to the application log in page. You log in and it says on the top center what the decision is.
