I just submitted my app. Prior to doing so however, I called and talked to someone in admissions. She said, the real deadline is midnight - not 5pm. Hope she wasn't lying to me, I literally just submitted (5:37pm).

If that's true, you just made my day! But what'd she mean by 'real' deadline? And did you explain why you were submitting late?

Hmmm, it makes sense though. The time deadlines for many schools are buried in the application instructions rather than easily viewable through the generic website FAQs. Many people aren't reading the instructions so considering slightly late applications would probably save them a lot of headaches.

I had called earlier in the day asking about scanning transcripts. Basically, I still haven't received one of my transcripts and so I submitted a PDF of the unofficial right off my institutions website, wanted to make sure that would be okay (I later to have to resubmit original when I get it).

I then re-called because my first scan I did of my official transcript for my other school was barely legible, and asked if I could submit another unofficial transcript. This was at about 4pm. She then told me I still have time to rescan it because, "The office closes at 5, but you can still submit online until midnight."

Oh, that's cool. So either it's a remnant from the paper age or that admissions office has a dark sense of humor.

"The office closes at 5, but you can still submit online until midnight... we'll just consider it for Round 3..."

But, seriously, I hope they do take any applications that you have to send tonight after the deadline. Good luck all.

I'm in for R2 as well.

Frankly, I hope anything submitted a minute after 5 doesn't count because those are the rules we were asked to play by and I also would prefer fewer people applying even if it is < 100 people. Less competition, better odds.

Haha, fair enough. If there were only 100 people applying though, they might use the waitlist from R1 even more, therefore not improving your chances massively. :-D

Or something....

The < 100 people was meant for people turning in shortly after the deadline. I obviously expect way more apps for the 2nd round. In fact, I wonder how many apps they received for the 1st?

Cata1yst, I'm going to have to disappoint you. I just rang the admissions office. The lady I spoke to was like 'oh, that's no problem!'. It's great that they're accommodating. Phew!

Hey congrats JB. I think my favorite part of reading the boards so far has been seeing you submit several applications late but still clear them to R2. I disagree with Catalyst though. If I'm going to get into a school like Duke, I want to know that as many applicants as possible submitted competitive applications as early as possible -- but the adcom still felt I was worth an invite. I wouldn't want anyone handicapped for missing a deadline by a few minutes.

Ah...well that is definitely good for you. On my visit, to Duke the first thing the lady from Admissions said was, "Before I start, everyone write this down on a piece of paper or in big letters on your hand...do not submit Round 3." Obviously, I think everyone here already knew this though.

Overall, the problem I have with allowing late submissions is then why even have a deadline? What makes one (or many) individual(s) a special circumstance over every other person that submitted on time. To me, it is just a slap in the face and unprofessional.

Anyways...congrats on them allowing it to count towards Round 2.

Haha, it certainly wasn't part of some cunning plan, just me being hopelessly disorganized and letting work get ahead of essays.

Just Kellogg to go now. I've made a bet with myself that it will definitely go in with at least 15 minutes to spare. Heh. Good luck to you!

I actually somewhat agree with you, even though the opposite obviously favored me here. But I guess they understand that even with the best of intentions, bad things can happen sometimes. Which is great, on the whole, 'cos it brings out the human side to this whole gut-wrenching process, I think. Feel free to disagree.

I think a few minutes late is a different story that the next day. There are too many conflicting sources of information about actual minutes, especially considering time zone issues. Next day should be unacceptable, but 11:59 PM PST should be the true final deadline.

For example, on Anderson's blog, it stated a deadline of 5 PM PST that was extended until midnight. While the system specified 9PM PST, but operated on EST. How are you supposed to know?

Agreed, I think the 5 pm stated deadline with a 11:59 pm actual deadline is a fair way for schools to manage the process. I don't think any school wants to deny a qualified candidate's app b/c the candidate was unable login to the school's over-crowded server during the 2 hours preceding the deadline.

Then just make the deadline midnight (the institution has to be sure everywhere on website and application sever that it says midnight because if not then, yes, that is BS).

Also, the school isn't denying a qualified candidate's application...it just gets pushed back to a later round. And if it is the Round 3 and you are late, well, those are the breaks.

I don't mean to come off like an @$$, but the deadlines were released in July...if (potential) business students can't hit deadlines with that much lead time then there is a problem (there may be computer issues, but submitting a couple days early is always an option). These are only applications...so when you become a student are you going to do everything in your power to meet tighter time constraints on projects? Personally, I don't think I would want to be partners with people who can't submit an application in on time. It's not that difficult. There is a deadline. You either hit it or you don't.

I guess I was just raised to be prompt (or most likely early) for everything. No excuses. I guess that is what years of strict football coaches will do to you. I barely slept the past week to put the final touches on my four applications and submit them on time.

Unhedged, you're my hero! How on earth did you manage NINE applications? I've struggled to do 2 so far in a round, although I did really late.

Johnny...I am doing 6 for Round 2 and let's just say I don't have much of a life. Work. GMAT/Applications. Get drunk. Sleep. Repeat.

LOL thanks. I didn't intend to do 9, i was pretty set on 3 in R1 and 3 in R2. But I pushed one up to R1 (Ross) after visiting and determining it was one of my top choices. My way of dealing with the anxiety became add more schools. NYU (Late R1), Duke (R2), and Texas (R2)And then NYU had a really late R1 deadline, so it became 5 in R1. I just kept the same intensity to get through for R2 all through Nov/Dec.
