Just realized what I sent Fuqua was NOT my official transcript but my official student record instead...great...I'm an idiot. Now I emailed Fuqua and told them I made a mistake and now am waiting for my Official Transcript to get mailed to me so I can (Hopefully) send it to Fuqua to be considered for R2...wish me luck everyone.

I agree that the 30% rise is in part due to fee waivers. I mean, it is part of what convinced me to apply. That said, its important to remember that quantity <> quality. its highly doubtful all 30% are above last year's "average" candiate.

lets just say i was gobsmacked! 30% up.. umm i thought apps were down this year across the board. this is not a good thing for me to hear 10 days before results.

I thought application were up, where did you hear that applications are down? The economy is still bad, and most of the fallout from the financial crisis hits this year's applicant pool.

To piggy back off of ACNGuy's point - did anybody else have trouble getting the official transcripts uploaded?

My schools took way longer than expected. Does anybody have experience regarding this matter or know if Duke is lenient if you just uploaded an unofficial transcript? All other schools I applied to just needed an unofficial one so Duke would be my only school I am having problems with.

Are you having trouble getting uploaded on the system, or actually receving the transcript from your school? If the latter, which is what it seems to be, then you will probably be fine, so long as you've uploaded your unoffifial one AND been in touch with Duke already explaining that your other schools have taken ages. Of course, the website and the instructions clearly mention that scans of official documents are required - I'm just guessing they will be accommodating based on what I've seen thus far.

I have read about applications being flat to down somewhere... cannot remember where... Still, 30% up is amazing. But I really believe that the admission fee waiver/discounted rate helped those numbers... The fact is: how many people that really liked Duke have applied just because of the lower admission rate? I think not many. Likely, many of those who were lured to apply by the lower rate weren't so convinced about Duke and likely didn't put a strong application in. My 2 cents only of course... :) And this by the way should make all applicants who received an interview invite much more confident about their chances - it really means that adcoms like your application! :)

I don't mean to come off like an @$$, but the deadlines were released in July...if (potential) business students can't hit deadlines with that much lead time then there is a problem (there may be computer issues, but submitting a couple days early is always an option). These are only applications...so when you become a student are you going to do everything in your power to meet tighter time constraints on projects? Personally, I don't think I would want to be partners with people who can't submit an application in on time. It's not that difficult. There is a deadline. You either hit it or you don't.

I have to agree with you. Duke will evaluate all applications, regardless of the time they got in (few hours up or down doesn't make a difference). I bet the stress of you being late is also reflected in less than perfect essays and missed fields on 10 pages long application.

Well, considering I'm the one who first brought the deadline up, I figure I might add a few words.

One. Some deadlines are slightly ambiguous because 5:00pm is relative, not absolute, and some websites do a poor job of making that clear.

Two. All my essays were done in plenty of time. My problem was my transcript. I went to kinko's to scan my transcript where I quickly learned that the 500kb maximum file size would be difficult to hit and still be legible. I called the admissions office (3:30pm) worried about it and they informed me if I needed to scan it again, I still had plenty of time since I could actually submit until midnight. After playing with it some more, I finally remembered how to decrease the file size w/o hurting the legibility (6:30pm).

Honestly, I don't understand why Duke insists on having scanned copies of your official transcripts. I could have just as easily manipulated the scan as I could have manipulated an unofficial copy. Further, they require official copies to be sent upon granted admission regardless. Other schools allow unofficial/self-reported transcripts such as Columbia/Wharton, why can't they do the same? Of all the schools I've applied to, Duke is the only one that requires this, which to me makes their application slightly unconventional. As a result, I don't think anyone should be getting mad that I needed to use an extra hour or so to deal with technical difficulties that are unique to their application.

Three. Increased/decreased competition is a two-edged sword. If you get in, you obviously want to have the most competitive classmates surrounding you because your degree is only as good as the brand it represents, and so it's not such a bad thing that people were a little over the 5pm deadline. Conversely, I understand that there are those who are worried that they may be "on the bubble" relative to average statistics, and that these applications may further decrease your chances. Just think about that if you are accepted.

Four. Not everyone knows which schools they to plan to apply to in June, July, August, September, October, November, or in my case even December. As a result, I didn't start the Duke App until after Christmas - should I be penalized for that? I think people need to extract the "holyier than now" attitude from these forums. Things happen - and not everyone described their circumstances on a message board. Perhaps it might be better to not judge and keep a positive attitude.

Here was my thought process:
1) Duke is highly ranked, but I'm not sure about the network/geography
2) Duke is offering a discount, so let me research the program more
3) WOW this program is great, I should have paid more attention to it before. Had I known it was this awesome, I would have paid full-price for the application fee.

I think the purpose was to entice people to go Step 2, as opposed to stopping at Step 1. because they feel Step 3 will happen. However, I also think this leads to the alternate Step 3, which is

3alt) This program seems to be a stretch, but at 50 dollars, won't hurt to apply.

I think there will be a mix of 3 and 3alt

(not sure why this is relevant, but overranalyzing is helping with the stress :-D )

Couldn't agree more. Duke got me to #3, for sure. I hadn't even considered an application to Duke prior to attending the info session but now it's my top choice.

Having spoke with some adcoms at other schools, it seems that the prevailing view is that Duke's app volume is up at least partly as a result of their fee waiver. Anecdotally, apps appear to be down for other schools in the top 15.

I wonder though if this'll spark a trend (cheaper applications to attract more/better apps?) If I were them, I'd probably try to check if the people who got fee waivers have a higher admit rate than the ones that didn't (or some other such statistic). They might just be throwing money and not getting higher benefit. Then again, the guy a few posts above posited some good scenarios.

For me personally, I kept not being able to attend an info-session so I paid the full fee for the Duke app...

Same here. And now it seems like pretty much everybody made use of the waiver. So I just wince inside every time I read about someone else having $150 more for weekend shenigans. It makes me :(

P.S: I'm sure I will get over it real quick if I get in, though.

P.P.S: I'm also sure it will hurt more if I do not get in.

I wonder if it's to boost rankings, since acceptance rate is part of the equation.
I know that Cal-Berkeley Law School is famous for giving out fee waiver to boost applications.

I'm super broke, so fee waiver affected my decision in applying and not applying for some schools. Although with Fuqua, I was going to apply either way.

It might boost rankings just from their selectivity metric (in US News and World Report and what not)...

I paid 200 USD as well, even though I visited campus... but I did it last year, so it was too early :) haha anyway Duke has always been my top choice, regardless of waiver or non waiver, and I really hope to get in (I just regret not having made it for R1).

One more week of wait!!
