Bottom line, there are a lot of really great schools in this country. Duke being number one is simply a testament to the fact that it is an awesome school, and this is something that all associated with the school should be proud of. In the end, Fuqua is the exact same school today that it was when US News said it was the fourteenth best school in the country earlier this year. The same can be said for Harvard, Stanford, etc... Even if the rankings are inconsistent, you have to be doing something right to be ranked #1.
You got a point, but personally I'd have preferred Duke being ranked #1 by a ranking which had some higher level of reliability.
If you are accepted at both Harvard and Duke, where would you go? More importantly, if a recruiter had a choice between two candidates with same abilities but one from Harvard and the other from Duke, who would s/he accept? I believe answer to these questions would help judge the rankings better.
if i were a recruiter, and as you mentioned same abilities, i would hire the duke.. one because he/she comes at a lower cost.
i would not want to pay extra for something i dont need (brand value of the school)
tech + health sector is growing.
having "harvard" tag on the team does not bring more business.
it might in the case of consultancy/banking.
(please note assumption was candidates of similar ability)
(moreover, is there a point beyond which having higher abilities (reflected in gpa, gmat, ug, branded companies) does not translate into better performance for companies/businesses? i dont have the answer to the question. i wonder)
