I sure wish I were kidding :(

The letter indicated that the reasons for the ding were most likely an "effort to maintain small class size" and "an extremely competitive applicant pool".

I heard some people describe Tuck as a "finance school" but I have never worked in finance did not indicate any desire to work in finance anywhere in my application. Perhaps that had something to do with it. High tech marketing and General Management are really my areas of interest. I thought my Kellogg interview went a lot better than my Tuck interview, mainly because I had my Tuck interview two days after a 3000+ mile flight and one day after a 200+ mile drive! I was not really at my absolute best that day. My essays were a bit on the long side, with one being over 1200 words. I thought that it would be okay since there was no explicit word limit and I had a lot to say. In hindsight, I probably should have cut them down so that they were closer to the average of 500.

Neither did I. Tuck is definitely a general management school, never heard about it being a finance school (but the placements in finance are good too).
Sorry for your ding

Bingo! With the 500 word suggested length, you can go over by 10% or so, maybe even up to 600 for one essay, but 1200 words!?!?! That's really a lot, even for a 1000 suggested word limit. This is a major faux pas on an MBA application for many reasons. I'm sure it was one of the main, if not THE main reason why you were dinged given your strong profile.

Just out of curiosity, did anyone review your essays before you submitted them?

I wonder if it is true that Tuck keeps a small waitlist because I have already counted 6 people on the waitlist for both business week and gmat club forums. Congrats to all those who are admitted and good luck to us, waitlisters! :P

Yes, I had a friend with an MBA review them. He told me not to worry about the word limits if there was no explicit requirement, and actually encouraged me to pile more onto essay 2, which was originally ~910 words. I looked at the essays just now and the word counts were....

Essay 1: ~810 words
Essay 2: ~1240 words
Essay 3: ~680 words
Essay 4: ~640 words

Fortunately, I was at or under the word count for every essay on my other applications, all of which had explicit word limits.

Hey usmbaquest, I don't want trivialize your pain but I think the fact that you got FOUR interview calls from FOUR great schools speaks volume of your potential and candidacy. Perhaps, the issue is with your interview techniques? This might be an area to look into, and I believe having a great interview can really seal the deal for you. I am sitting on a waitlist right now, and I plan to do everything to strengthen my profile. I wish you can find that area that needs improvements, correct it and then get accepted to that top business school! We can do this!

Congratulations to all admits. I am a lurker on this thread and am very happy for all of you guys.

Quick question for anyone that may know: How common are Tuck initiated interviews? Is it a really good sign if you receive one and do well? I know this may seem like an obvious question, but I a curious as to whether Tuck initiated interviews are commonplace. Thanks for any info!

Be well!

True that. I think this is a great profile. I am an engineer too and got a ding. I believe the email was a generic one.

My essays were a bit long too

1st essay- 970
2nd- 587
3rd- 447
4th - 617

My interview went well according to me.

My profile

GMAT - 700
B.E in Computer engineering from a top 10 university in India- GPA 7.2/10

MS from San Jose State University - 3.6 GPA

Excellent Internship experience with companies like Apple Computer

3 years Full Time work experience with a top virtualization company as an engineer. Been promoted once and currently working in a lead role with multiple leadership roles at the company.

Extracurricular- Many leadership roles since college. In sports and other projects. Involved with 2 charities since I was 17.

Highly interested in Entrepreneurship and general management.

My request to the candidates who got it. Can they share their profile and some tips on essays with the ones who got dinged.

I applied to Stanford, Tuck, Haas, Tepper and UCLA. After a ding from Tuck I am not very hopeful of my chances. I am hoping to get some help from the experts here who have been admitted and what I can do to strengthen my chances. Is it possible for the ones who got admits to review my essays from one school and provide feedback? I must state that I spend a considerable amount of time in preparing my applications and writing my essays along with getting them reviewed from friends.

Thanks a lot for your time and I am really hoping to get some positive replies to my call for help.

My essays were 550/550/650/650 in length.

We can take this to PM if you like but my number one concern would be this:

"Highly interested in Entrepreneurship and general management."

That's extremely general. I am also interested in Entrepreneurship, however I didnt say in my essays I was "interested" in it, I said I was going to be a tech entrepreneur. My goals were hyper-specific. I basically gave the adcom a roadmap of my career, how I was going to get there, why I needed the MBA from Tuck to do it.

If you view Tuck as a business and the adcom as the hiring manager, your application should be for a certain position (your goals). You have to make them see the fit, that youre qualified for the position (or can make the transition given your abilities or past background). If you dont connect the dots in their head, its going to be hard to get in. I didnt read your essays so I dont know if they were themed as generally as I am assuming, but if you just said you are interested in entrepreneurship, it would be like going to Goldman Sachs, applying and telling them you are interested in Finance. You need to be more specific to get the goods. Just my $.02
