As I said before on this forum, the ranking system provides valuable information to the adcom and lets them protect their yields, which is an important element of their own rankings for their program. Put yourself in their shoes. You must understand their mission and their job. If I were an adcom member, and I saw two consortium applicants, all else equal, I'm going with the one who ranked me #1 as opposed to the one who ranked me #2 and who didn't get in to his top choice and chose me as plan B. With my rejection letter, I'll tell that applicant " ____ you, I'll show you who's number two!" That's why the best strategy is to take a hard look at your credentials and application profile and apply to the school where you think you have a decent shot at being accepted. Remember, for consortium applicants, there's more at stake than just admission. There's $100K on the line. As far as I'm concerned, I'd rather go to a school ranked between #10 and 20 for free, than take out a $160K loan for H,W,S. The job opportunities are the same. And when you start comparing schools in the aforementioned bracket, the differences are truly negligible and insignificant. So to make a mistake applying to Tuck or Hass, when you know the chances are a bit lower, you are taking an unnecessary and imprudent risk that does not help you with your overall goal of launching a great career with the least amount of debt possible. The consortium people say to not try to game the system, but that's exactly what you need to do in so many words.
Trust me on this one, I speak from experience.

I have to disagree with some of your points.

1. Put yourself in their shoes

Only if they use disinfectant

2. take out a $160K loan for H,W,S.

As I said before you should say HSW because some S people might get offended for putting them after W

3. job opportunities are the same

That's so no true. If I go to Harvard I have a better chance of landing a job in a minimum security prison along with some of my fellow classmates after being convicted of insider trading

lol @ lagomez's sarcasm

I do agree with the poster's comments. Just being sarcastic because I expect dings across the board this year.

No worries though.

No lagomez! Say it ain't so. You truly are hysterical. I'm hoping we end up in the same program. I don't think I would stop laughing for the entire 2 years.

Thanks. I appreciate it. Maybe I should just show up to NYU Diversity Day on the 25th even though I wasn't invited. Would that be awkward?

I have a funny feeling I'm going to be dinged across the board as well. I guess it begins in 4 days.

@lagomez One of two things could happen. 1) Security is called, and you're lead out among the gasps and stares of the prospective students. 2) You have one of those movie moments where one person starts clapping (slowly) and then it starts to spread across the crowd until the clapping builds into a rapturous applause. Whereby this point the dean comes out and hands you an a letter of acceptance, you jump into the air with a fist raised, the scene freezes, 80's music starts...etc.

I say go for it.

Ha haha..point #2 is hysterical

I hear NYU gives tee shirts at this thing. I was thinking point #3 would be everyone handing in their shirt, one by one, to the dean, and saying "this is for lagomez..I want lagomez to dress in my place"

Eventually I get accepted and everyone carries me on their shoulders when we all leave the diversity day. I'll be the first and last person to be carried out.

hahaha lagomez, you are hilarious!

That said, if you need a partner in crime to crash diversity day, I'm sooo in!

I take the gmats march 1st, day of the fellowship call. I plan on faxing scores to NYU the day of, if I don't hand deliver it in hopes of an impromptu interview. So my chances at getting that free t-shirt are slim :(

Let's do it..let's meet in Greenwich Village over yonder

I can see how it plays out:

lagomez: Sons of The Consortium, I am lagomez.

all the applicants well then say: lagomez is 7 feet tall.

lagomez: Yes, I've heard. sends in applications by the hundreds, and if the admission committees were here he'd consume them with fireballs from his eyes and bolts of lightning from his arse. I AM lagomez. And I see a whole army of my fellow applicants here in defiance of the diversity day. You have come to fight as free applicants, and free applicants you are. What would you do without a fellowship? Will you fight?

other applicants: Fight? Against that? No, we will run; and we will apply somewhere else.

lagomez: Aye, fight and you may accepted. Run and you'll live -- at least a while before another ding. And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance to get into your favorite Consortium school, just one chance to come back here and tell our future Consortium applicants that they may take our lives, but they'll never take our application fees!!!

lagomez and applicants: Alba gu bra! (Consortium forever!)

Guys.. All of the schools WANT to be listed as number one. That makes sense right? But the truth of the matter is thatthe schools know who they want. If you get into a school and you ranked them 1st but don't support the consortium mission then maybe someone who does support the mission and ranked said school second will get the fellowship. All you/we can do is just trust that when each of us made our rankings that we were ok with our reasonings for placing a school on the list where we did.

We can all go back now that we've seen how admissions have started to play out and say "oh I wish I ranked X school higher". Try to refrain from doing that! We are all amazing and will be billionaires so in the long run it's pennies! ;-)

Sorry, but I have to add something to this thought. Supporting the mission is important, but remember that close to 70% of admitted students get the fellowship, and not all of the 30% are declined because of their perceived lack of mission support. Some schools just don't give out as many fellowships. I've asked about this and I think that the big deal here is getting admitted. No school will admit you on the basis of your mission support essay, if you have an otherwise weak application, but I think the reverse is possible. So I wouldn't rest my head on the hopes that you are getting into your number 2 school, with FS, in anticipation that your mission support is so much stronger than a weaker-mission/stronger-overall applicant who ranked the same school #1.

Hey, where are you getting your "70/30" facts?

its a generally accepted statistical trend. The Consortium people will tell you if you call them. Its more like 68% or so. I think it was also stated in one of the chats on accepted.com. I'm not just making up the numbers because I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night. ;)

@lagomez - you should have used your real name on here so that any adcom members perusing the site would see how funny you are and know that people would want you in their classes. You'll be fine and you will get in somewhere... all NYU invites have not gone out yet but dings have... so if you have not been Dinged then keep hope alive ::puts fist up:: or is that black power? nm nix that...

LaGomez,
When you are accepted and matriculate, make sure you read over all of your posts on this forum before class discussion, because if you happen to recycle any of your material in class and we remember it, someone is going to jump up out of their seat and say, "It's him, it's LaGomez" agggghhhhhhhhh!!! :)
Then we will run over and give you a hug and ask for your autograph..

Not sure if anyone else heard this, but I literally just spoke to one assistant admissions director at Tuck and they said that the Consortium requires that ALL schools make decisions about fellowships before 3/1. Which I am assuming means that the schools that require you to do a interview in addition to the Consortium interview have already sent out all of their interview invites, seeing as though 3/1 is next Tuesday.
