All other things considered, do you think people applying to Yale who want to get into social enterprise might be at a disadvantage considering what the reputation of the school is and the type of person who is drawn to it? Almost like the Indian/male/IT group...you have to be stellar in order to stand out in this pool? Or does it not really matter in this case?
Hi there, I personally think that the two examples you give are not comparable - one is a background trait (where schools want diversity) and the other is an aspiration/career choice which speaks to fit. I think that if you want to get into social enterprise you are likely to choose to apply to schools that have a good program/reputation in that area - it speaks to your commitment. So I think if anything, it shows at least initial fit with that school's environment, of course the true fit really shows at your interview. The only disadvantage I can think of is that there are many more other applicants interested in social entrepreneurship applying to these schools, but these schools accept a higher percentage of people interested in that field compared to other schools. Also, there are countless specific jobs/employers/career paths in the field of social enterprise that will differentiate you and are not quantifiable. So you can stand out by being attractive, not necessarily stellar.
