True, many of the consulting roles at Georgetown are in the federal space - a function of our location, our base of alums, and also the specific interest of some candidates (better work-life balance and less travel in federal consulting). With that said, those of us interested in the commercial space have had success at the top tier firms in recent years, both in full-time and internship recruitment. As 2012applicant has stated, being proactive in the recruiting process is key - not all firms recruit on-campus (yet), but McDonough's brand in consulting is definitely on the rise (for various reasons) and more of our colleagues are getting noticed and scoring first and second round interviews.
Sorry for such a belated response. I didn't see this earlier.
Unfortunately, I'm not the best person to talk about consulting, as I'm focused on investment banking. It is true that the DC firms predominantly focus on federal consulting, but not exclusively. And current students are taking the initiative to travel to Boston and NYC to interview with firms. Heck, one of my classmates interviewed with McKinsey in Boston for a position in the firm's Middle East office.
What it really comes down to is being proactive in the recruiting process, networking through friends, family, undergrad alum, LinkedIn, etc. to find contacts at the firms where you want to work.

Yes, not all are federal consulting, but seems like majority of them are.
2012applicant, Can you provide more insight on this?
