Quick question for those who interviewed on campus and participated in the group lunch.

Did anyone bring their spouse to the lunch, or was it strictly intervewees and ADCOM members?

Only Interviewees and Adcom attended the lunch on the day I was there.

"Crazy" entrepreneur in for Rd 3. I view it as a high risk/high reward kind of situation. Hopefully the class isn't full.

From Her Royal Highness:
Round Three - Should You or Shouldn't You?
Date: February 28, 2011

As the Class of 2013 application season rounds the corner toward the finish line, you may be asking yourself whether it's worth your time and money to submit an application. Is it too much of a long shot?

You may be surprised to learn that we ask ourselves the same question every year. Should there even be a round 3? Why can't we just wrap the class up in two rounds? Answer: even though we could - we always conclude that we like Round 3 enough to keep it as an option. Although we have admitted about 90% of the class by this time, we always - ALWAYS - see enough interesting Round 3 applicants to want to do it again. I know you wish I could define "interesting" with pinpoint accuracy but I can't. Sometimes it's work experience, sometimes it's an undergraduate school we wish we had more students from, sometimes it's a compelling recommendation and sometimes it's just "something". I will say that it's always that we have absolutely no doubts about a candidate's leadership talent, character or academic capabilities - the same hurdle we have for the earlier rounds.

A group that is especially welcome in round 3 is college senior applicants. The positive outcome for this group is always "deferred admission" - a spot in a future class. Hence, making decisions about these applicants is not driven by seats available in September, 2011.

Maybe it would be helpful to turn the tables and give some advice on when it's NOT a good idea to apply in Round 3. So...

DON'T apply to HBS in Round 3 if:

You are an international candidate and have serious concerns about the likelihood of getting a visa in a timely manner.
(We've seen this happen and it may cause you serious stress and uncertainty about whether you will be able to get here in time for term start-up.)
You are expecting an Admit Welcome Weekend to enable you to meet future classmates.
(We don't have one.)
You really want to come in September, 2012 and are hoping to be granted a postponement.
(Won't happen.)
You are counting on getting on-campus housing.
(You'll have missed the lottery. On campus housing COULD work out for you, but you may need to find other options.)
You are using this as a "trial" application and are hoping for feedback on this application to increase your chances of success next year.
(Can't do it.)
As always, trying to make this process as easy for you to understand as we can.

Ivy League Dating Website Promises to Help You Meet Your Sugar Daddy
by Eve Binder | March 1, 2011 at 9:34 am

IvyDate was founded by two graduates of Harvard Business School, which–given that school’s sheer abundance of white-collared yuppies with $500 glasses and $2,000 laptops and ten cents of common sense and zero percent compounded interest in the sex department–frankly surprises no one.

Just got back from my cross-country trip which produced only about 36 hours on the ground in Boston--long enough to go out in Southie on Sunday night, go to two classes, lunch, and my interview yesterday, then out in the North End last night before catching a 6am flight this morning.

I interviewed with an AdCom member late in the afternoon--I was the last interview slot for the day so I thought she might be a little lenient with the 30 minute rule, but she stuck right to it. Things went by pretty quickly. Here's what I remember her asking me about (in no particular order):

How was your trip? Did you have time for a tour or class visit? What did you think?
How did you know you wanted to be a Marine?
What about your experiences made you want to get out of the Marine Corps? When did you know you wanted to get out?
What made you decide to go after an MBA?
What's your career vision?
What are the best and worst things about your current job?
How is this job different from your previous ones?
Did you pursue it or were you assigned to it?
How and why did you choose your undergrad school and major?
What do you do for fun?
What's the best concert you've ever been to? (Since I mentioned live music as a hobby.)
What sources do you use for news?
What's the most interesting article you've read lately? Did you agree with it? (Note--I mentioned a pretty obscure Atlantic Monthly article about why a lot of our good military officers are getting out and she had read it too. Moral of the story--don't try to BS these people, because they are very well-read and know almost everything.)
What's the last book you read? (Fortunately I just finished a good one on Saturday, so I was able to talk in depth about it.)

So as you can see, it was pretty straightforward and I didn't get any curveball questions. The unofficial Harbus interview guide was good prep...other than that just know your story and be able to talk about what you've learned from your experiences and what you want to do.

We didn't have any time for questions and she was pretty emphatic in stating that all decisions would be released around mid-day on March 29. I didn't get a business card from her but I got a generic AdCom email address from the receptionist on the way out--apparently you can send a thank-you message to that address with the interviewer's name in the subject line and he/she will get it.

The big question now: How do you not screw up your interview?
For some smart, tell-it-like-it-is counsel, we turned to Sandy Kreisberg, aka HBS Guru, the rebel savant of MBA admissions consulting. The highly opinionated Kreisberg has been advising applicants to Harvard, Stanford, Wharton and other elite B-schools for some 15 years. During the 2009-2010 application season, Kreisberg conducted mock interviews with more than 100 applicants to Harvard alone, a service he offers for $300. (For details, see his website.)

Sandy, can you comment on applications for Round 3 at Harvard?(what is it ,in your opinion, that HRH is looking for in the last round? Would you think they would take in more consultants or finance backgrounds or try to focus more on non-traditional backgrounds by trying to work a bit more on diversifying the class ?)Do you happen to know the average number of applicants for the third pool or the average number of people who are accepted in the last round? I will submit my app on March 31.

How do you guys interpret Dee's latest post: "...we have admitted about 90% of the class by this time..."?

Does this mean they've already made decisions for round 2 applicants who have been interviewed? Or does she mean by the time Round 3 starts there's only 10% spots left?

Do they make decisions on a rolling basis or do they make all the decisions at the end??

They absolutely make decisions on rolling. It would be impossible to make 500 decisions in the span of 5 days (the last interviews take place in China on March 24). The thing is they don't notify applicant so they can always un-admit if they have a change of heart.

They only discuss some applications at board meetings so that means many decisions are decided by a series of individual Yes's. Each app is read 5-6 times. at least 2 times initially before invite to interview, 1 time by interviewer and then, it seems like 1 time (your file will now contain your interview report) by a senior adcom member before final read by Dee.

I take that to mean that they've admitted 90% of the class once they announce R2 decisions, so very few spots are left for R3 applicants. There's no way they could have admitted 90% already because R2 interviews are running for another few weeks.

My interviewer told me that all decisions will be announced on the R2 notification date of March 29, so there won't be rolling admissions.

Another quick question - did anyone actually interview with Dee this year? Does that still happen?
