How do you guys interpret Dee's latest post: "...we have admitted about 90% of the class by this time..."?

Does this mean they've already made decisions for round 2 applicants who have been interviewed? Or does she mean by the time Round 3 starts there's only 10% spots left?

Do they make decisions on a rolling basis or do they make all the decisions at the end??

JUST EDUCATED GUESS HERE:
HBS ADMITS 1000 KIDS FOR CLASS OF ~906
THEY ADMIT 900-20 IN ROUNDS 1 AND 2.
THE ADMIT 80-110 IN R3, GOOD BUNCH OF WHOM ARE COLLEGE SENIORS, SAY 40 OR SO -
SO ABOUT ~60 REAL SPOTS OPEN FOR FOLKS IN R3. YOU ARE PROB DISADVANTAGED IF YOU ARE VANILLA
MC, IB, PE ETC. THE ROUND 3 ADMITS I KNOW OF VARY FROM CLASSICALLY NON-STANDARD, TO INTERESTING TWIST ON STANDARD, E.G. KID WHO WAS IN COMMERCIAL BANKING AND HAD GREAT STORIES ABOUT HELPING LOCAL NABE BUSINESSES GET LOANS, AND PLANS TO EXPAND SMALL COMMERCIAL BANK (FAMILY DEAL ).

LMAO. Sandy you are too much.

hmm I wonder where waitlisters without interview fall in that number.

I just purchased the HBS interview guide published by the Harbus and I didn't receive an e-mail with a link to access to the guide and I didn't get a link after my payment had been processed. Anyone purchase it? If so, how did you access it? Thanks

I think you'll have to allow 24 hours for their response. The Harbus response email is done manually, not automated, so it may take a while. Hope this info helps.

'Naive' and 'embarrassed': Beyonce, Carey shamed by Libya links March 4, 2011 - 12:19PM

Stars regret private Gaddafi family shows
Stars including Beyonce, Mariah Carey and Nelly Furtado express regrets over private concerts linked to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's family.

Video feedbackVideo settingsSingers Beyonce and Mariah Carey have sought to distance themselves from the tainted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, for whose entourage they both performed at glitzy New Year's eve parties.

They joined Canadian artist Nelly Furtado, who used her Twitter account on Monday to declare she would give away the $1 million she received to perform a 45-minute set in Italy for Gaddafi's family in 2007.

Pop stars' association with Gaddafi and his sons has caused considerable embarrassment this week as the Libyan ruler orders a brutal crackdown on an uprising against his rule.

Monitor Consulting, HBS Prof Porter, and others back-pedal on Libyan help. HKS Nye helped junior w. his thesis.

B SCHOOL PROFS AND OTHER EGGHEADS BACK-PEDAL ON LIBYA HELP

Yesterday, Monitor Group acknowledged in a statement that its paid work included helping Khadafy's son Saif with his doctoral dissertation at the London School of Economics.

The firm said that assistance and the book proposal were mistakes. But its statement stressed that the firm's main effort was designed to help Khadafy's dictatorship bring about change. Many of the firm's internal memos had been revealed on a Libyan opposition group website in 2009.

The fallout over relations between high-profile academics and Libya has already taken a toll. Sir Howard Davies resigned yesterday as a director at the London School of Economics, which said it would start an inquiry into the school?s ties with the Khadafy family.

. . .
...
Monitor’s work in Libya began when Michael Porter, a Harvard Business School professor who is among the country’s top theorists on management strategies, received a call from Saif Khadafy around 2001, according to Porter. Saif, a Western-leaning doctoral student who US officials hoped would become the next leader of Libya, asked for his expertise to help change Libya’s battered, Soviet-style economy.

Yeah I went through the same thing. They really need to put up more detailed instructions on their web-site. After waiting 10 minutes, and not getting an email, I sent an email to the Harbus crew. The next morning they replied. They apparently manually check the email from the paypal - then send you the PDF. I'd expect a <24 hour turnaround.

This is unfortunate because I'm guessing at the moment you paid - you were ready to start reading.

6 hours before my HBS interview I stumbled across the guide and debated on whether to buy it. Now I see it was a good thing I didn't!

For all the guys that have already interviewed, how much of the 'why hbs?' did you feel like you were asked? Were any of you asked it directly?

I know the essays didn't expressly ask it, but I would assume that it would come up in the interview.

Nothing close to 'why HBS' came up in mine. I would expect the interview to be more focused on understanding the person behind the application - e.g. specific career-vision related questions rather than the generic 'why MBA' and 'why HBS' type questions. That said, certainly be ready for the standard ones, as well.

academist,

I would say it depends. Did you write why HBS in your application? If not, then be prepared for the question.

If you wrote why HBS? I think you are less likely to get that question.

So what is the consensus on a thank you email? Just had my interview yesterday, and I got the generic card w/ an hbs email account from the receptionist. My guess is that someone checks the inbox and forwards it to the appropriate interviewer. Should I even bother??

1) Of course you should bother. You've gone this far - why not follow through every way humanly possible?
2) Can you please share some details of your interview? I'll be interviewing next week and could use any insight I could get, as could everyone else who hasn't interviewed yet
3) Congrats - the hardest part is over now it's just waiting :-)

I think this is somewhat unusual actually. Be ready for it since it is such a common question for all other schools and if for some reason you do get asked it, that would pretty much be game over if you really botched it.

I have heard of people getting asked what will you do if you don't get into HBS, and if you say re-apply that would be a spot for you to follow-up on exactly why HBS is best for you.

Thanks! Yeah, I agree -- gonna send one off soon.

Be sure to check the clear admit wiki, tons of interview write-ups on there. Also, the harbus guide is def worth the $35.

Interview was 30 minutes on the dot, no time for questions. Lots of questions tailored specifically to my background and essays. Read, re-read, and re-re-read through your application. Try and put yourself in the adcom's shoes and think, what would I want to ask this person? That def helped me think through the questions that were tailored to me. Some of the more general questions I remember: why have I been successful at my company, what's most important to me among the things I do outside of work, what will I add to the HBS community. Good luck!

It didn't come up in mine, surprisingly. I got asked about my reasons for wanting to go to business school but nothing HBS-specific, aside from some small talk about what I thought about my class visit from that morning.

Thanks to everyone who answered my question! Good to hear that won't have to be the number one thing I focus on in preparing for my interview. That said, I've got some rock-solid why hbs responses

Got it in about another week... getting pretty nervous!!

Wanted to do my interview late so that I was 'fresher' in their mind when they eventually sat down at the table and decided... but I'm realizing that was actually a double or nothing: good if i do great, bad if I have a rough interview.
