Hey HBSguru, do you have an expected timeline for R3? When will interview invites start going out based on previous years? This timeline should be way shorter since May 5 is the deadline. Any thoughts or predictions?

on the admission blog, for a previous year, they said they will accept applications as long as they were submitted on the last date, 31st march this year, even if it is not submitted by noon.

Anyone has any sense on this? I have not been able to submit my application for round 3 yet. need another 2-3 hours.

Whothere,

Are you in for R3?

Last year, both deadlines for submission and decision were eight days earlier.
Last year, interview invites were sent out on April 17 (So quick! Just ten days after deadline)

So I guess it would be around April 10 this year, and conducted before April 20, thus give them two weeks to consider, and make final decision on May 5

If the application status changes has the following message, what does it mean?

"Your application is under review. MBA Admissions will contact you if we need further information. Please note that this field will not change again until the notification date. "

Is it just a generic message updated for all applicants or is it updated the moment some adcom picks your app for review?

It means they have your application and they may or may not have actually started reviewing it. There's no point in obsessing over exactly what that statement means.

At some point in the next few weeks Dee will come out with a blog post telling R3 applicants when the interview invitation window is, and that at the end of that window those who don't get interviews will be "released." Those who interview will be notified about their admit/ding/WL status on the published notification date.

From Dee herself:

Round Three Interviews
Date: April 04, 2011
Here we go.... We will begin to send out email invitations to interview on Friday, April 8. Detailed instructions will be included in the email. As I'm sure I don't have to tell you, this is a comparatively "short" round, i.e. not much time between submission and notification dates. For this reason, we are not going to do the "early release" process we do in Rounds 1 and 2. We'll send interview invitations out up until the notification date of May 5. Round 3 interviews will be conducted here on campus, on the West Coast, and via Skype for selected candidates. There may be a handful of Round 3 applicants asked to join the waitlist on May 5 - both with and without an interview.

That's all for now.

That was quick!!. I love R3

HBS Guru,

Any idea how many applications were submitted in R3 ( this yr or traditionally?) and a rough estimate of the number of candidates may receive a R3 invite?

\\

1. Read the New York Times / WP Post in its entirety for a few days prior so you can speak intelligently about school lunch subsidies or the Libyan situation with equal ease.

2. Go through every question you've seen on the boards about what question prior interviewees were asked and figure out how you would answer it for your own situation.

3. What was hard/easy/unexpected about each job or activity in my resume.

4. Read up in trade journals or be savvy about your industry or desired industry, be prepared to speak in some detail HOW you plan on taking over the world, etc.

5. Worst question I got- "In one sentence, describe to me why you deserve to be sitting at HBS next year over your competition."

6. Use Sandy Kriesberg's service. It was money, 90% of the questions we covered in mock interview were actually asked in the real interview.

1) KNOW YOUR STORY. Read your essays every day for the two weeks leading up to your interview. Just make sure you understand your motives for all the actions and decisions you made

2) Your interview won't be like anybody else's interview. Unlike alumni interviews, adcom reads your packet carefully. In my case, I was asked questions that I didn't expect to get.

3) Think about the interview from adcom's perspective. If you were on a group panel, and you read your application, what questions would you have? Are you older or younger than the average? Do you have interesting transitions, odd jobs, interesting extracurriculars? Think about any detail that they may want clarification on.

Example: I worked at AMD for 8 years. Rather than being asked about any of my experiences on the job, adcom asked me, "should I buy an AMD computer or an Intel computer?". Why did they ask this? I was caught off guard at first. From their perspective, they saw a highly technical engineer - they wanted to know if I could communicate complex technical thoughts in a non-technical way so I could participate well in our classes.

HBS wants diversity. They want people who can pick an answer, stick with it, and justify their answer. You should be confident enough to speak in front of a class, down to earth and humble, and able to communicate effectively and tell interesting stories.

Hope this helps. If you've made it to the interview - you're in a GREAT position! Good luck.

Give this a look https://www.clearadmit.com/wiki/index.ph ... dInterview (mine is #53, in case you've got any specific questions)

The Harbus interview prep guide is pretty useful too.

I see that they asked you what your favorite book was. Do you think that saying Harry Potter or the Red Riding hood will have a negative impact on the interview?

My take is that they'd rather see you talk about a book relating to a personal interest rather than trying to impress them by saying you just finished reading The McKinsey Way/BCG on Consulting/<insert the latest Malcolm Gladwell book here>. Something that shows depth of personality rather than you simply telling them what you think they want to hear. Either way, be sure to be able to talk in detail about why you liked the book and what you learned from it.

That being said, Harry Potter or Little Red Riding Hood may be seen as a little juvenile.

haha i was just kidding. I should have put a smiley face or something in there. Although you make good points. I thought you needed to say that you were reading financial journals from the latest Nobel price in economics, etc. to impress them. A serious book that reflects your personal interests will goo further i believe.

Im just hoping i get a call anyways. I will worry about this later. thanks for your opinion!
