Dee's new post, talk about open communication and the best process out there:

https://www.hbs.edu/mba/admissions/blog. ... 2012-01-13

Let me second that, HBS is making Stanford and The Hermit Kingdom a/k/a Wharton look silly and trussed-up and old fashioned. SK [hearts] Her Majesty.

if 480 admitted, let's assume 80-85% yield, which makes around 400 students matriculating.

With a class size around 940, that leaves 540 spots left. that really doesn't look too good for the volume of applications in R2 (along with the select few spots -- let's say 40 that they leave for R3) no?

LOL @ryan. I was going to say...

Regardless, I don't think this year is any different than previous years in terms of acceptance rates, etc. The one thing I would be curious about is what the distribution of apps looks like between R1/R2/R3. I am surprised that HBS released the numerical invite info but kudos to them for being so transparent. Most well-managed process amongst all the schools, IMHO.

Hi. I have a question that applies to other international applicants who don't live in cities where HBS will conduct interviews. I live in Moscow and I have not visited HBS. If I get an invite for an interview, is there any benefit at all (aside from sitting in on a class and seeing the campus - which I don't need to do to convince myself HBS is fantastic) to doing an interview on campus over a place like London or Paris? Officially I assume adcom will say "no". But for some reason if I were interviewing someone I would be flattered if this person made such a trek. However, I realize everyone wants to go to Harvard so its unlikely the adcom is going to place any value on a campus interview versus an international based interview. Just wanted to hear what others think... Thanks!
--------------
The short answer is that there is no penalty to interviewing in a Hub city.
There are reasons to possibly avoid certain Hub cites, or choose others, altho this is not a science.
New York, e.g. in Round 1 this year, and all rounds last year, may get you Charles, an alum and contract interviewer whom many people enjoy, but who often asks 'out of the box' questions. HBS interviews are REAL danger spots and a lifetime of accomplishment can be wiped out in a bad patch, so many folks choose not to roll the dice and interview in Boston over New York, where you will almost cert. get an adcom who is more likely to ask a subset of the 1000 routine questions. Similarly, Palo Alto will often get you Hilary, whom some find odd, but whose approach is well known (altho not predictable). London is often Ms. Lamb, who is predictable, a great plus. All that said, you could interview in NY, London and Palo Alto can get someone else, or get the person expected and really hit it off, or dupe yourself into thinking you had prepared. Soooo, as noted, this is pretty marginal --altho many kids in Palo Alto area have intentionally avoided Hilary b.c. she can be, in cases, unpredictable. This is an endless topic among S. Cal PE and VC types, taken out to 345 decimal places.
I am, ahem, in my own mind, the worlds greatest expert in HBS interviews, because I do about 100-130 mock HBS interviews a year (HBS itself interviews 1800+ a year, so that is a big subset, and have a huge database of prior questions, by INTERVIEWER, which is interesting but not as valuable as you might wish, even if you get that interviewer. E.g. I got tons of Elaine Chang interviews but like your exp. will vary, and she does not have pet questions, like Charles in NYC.
hope this helps.

So Dee's latest post confirms Sandy's earlier analysis: 855 people were interviewed for R1. I wonder how many eventually got in?

Update from Dillon House. Time to dust off this message board...

https://www.hbs.edu/mba/admissions/blog.html
SEE BELOW FOR TEXT OF HRH LEOPOLD MESSAGE--
FYI THAT MEANS
ROUND ONE

~850 INTERVIEWS
120 Waitlist
730 left

in the past, HBS has had a 59pct post interview admit nubmer, which is historical, and has been confirmed by HBS on occassion
If you apply that 59 pct to the 730, you get 430 admits, but you really need to apply it to the 850
to get 501, but 501 admits will not be sent out on D-Day, because some of those ultimate admits will be on the WL.
But WL admit is not 59 pct (by a long shot). Sooo, have fun and good luck. Number of admits sent out on D-Day I say, 480 or so. Based on what, the above and some hunches.
thus
850 kids Waiting
[b]480 Admits
120 WL
250 Dings

----------------------------------------------
Round 1 Notification
Date: December 12, 2011
It's a week away...so I thought some details might be in order.

This is our plan: On Monday, December 19 - hopefully at noon Boston time - all Round 1 interviewees will receive an email saying their decision is available online. We don't make any phone calls ahead of time...none. And that's a promise. Whatever the news is for you, we want to make sure you at least have control over the timing.

In addition to admit and deny notifcations, we will also be inviting about 120 or so candidates who have been interviewed to join our waitlist. All waitlisters will receive additional information from Dana Scalisi, who manages this process.

For candidates who are denied admission after an interview, there will also be information about call-in hours in January if anyone would like to have a conversation with me. I wouldn't call these "feedback" calls since they aren't very detailed...but sometimes it can be reassuring to hear that there were not specific weaknesses in an application, but rather just the reality of a highly selective process with the goal of maximizing the mix of voices and perspectives in the classroom.

For those of you in waiting mode, I send you all good wishes for distraction.

so what is the acceptance rate from waitlist I did not get it ? (maybe that's why I am on waitlist :))

So, why some people think Hilary in Palo Alto odd??

hmmm, odd is not precise, 'less predictable than many others,' is more accurate-- and predictability is what you want in this game. Altho let me say, many folks post interview by Hilary say 'whaaa?? perfectly predictable!, what you talking about?' altho a substantial group contra, which is all the wet-panty macho types at W. Coast PE firms need to hear--they book flights to 02138.
(and note, pointlessly, that HBS zip code is actually different).

Sandy,

I know you posted somewhere, maybe here or at P&Q, that you would welcome hearing how the candidates you assessed actually made out with acceptances, rejections wait lists, etc. I think it would make your entire series even more valuable. Perhaps the guy running P&Q can offer the approx. 100 users you ranked some type of gift card, or you could offer a free resume review, or something to entice them to provide their results- and then republish the whole series...

In fact you could probably even repackage and sell the whole series...If I was at beginning of this process I would buy something like that...to help me more realistically select schools...

At this point, I just read your reviews because your obscure references are funny as sh%t...anyone who can make a a reference to an Ayn Rand novel and Woody Allen film in the same paragraph while describing a candidate's chances, and have it make complete sense, is OK in my book...

I anxiously await the day you publish a satire about your years of experience with this "MBA deal"...

I appreciate the fact that HBS is so open with all their dates and how many interview invites we can expect to go out on each day. Other schools don't seem so open and it makes life that much more stressful for us anxious applicants as we turn to the rumor mills like these forums, but HBS is pretty cool with their blog. A little over one week till the first set of interview invites come out!

Out of curiosity, is there a difference which hub you interview at? I'm Chinese (but from Southeast Asia) and have heard rumours that Shanghai is tougher on Chinese applicants--is that true based on your experiences?

I don't see how anyone would be able to answer your question. One needs to have two interviews - one in Shanghai and one in another cities - to answer your question. Otherwise, the fact that a Chinese has interviews outside China may indicate this person is not a Chinese resident and thus not comparable to someone in China.
