I hear you. I just wanted to be realistic because I feel like, for example, if a company wants to hire somebody, they will call the one that they really want first. I think of the same logic to applications.

I spoke with a friend at HBS who told me he received his invite on the second day (not 2+2), so there is definitely hope.

True, but I think this is a systematically different process. There's such a huge volume of applications and such a short period of time for them to review them (at HBS, each app is reviewed in detail twice). It's tough to ignore the equivalency in the ratio of #of post-submission weeks prior to first invites / # of weeks after first invites until ding notifications = ratio of number of invites extended on first invite day / number of invites extended on ding day = 3/1 = 600/200. So there's that and there's the fact that that's exactly how they describe the process and we have no reason to think they're being disingenuous.

I see but also think about the unfairness of interview scheduling. First invites get their first dip on scheduling the interview and they get more time to prepare for the interview. So I am thinking they probably already sent out the invites to who they really want and 2+2s on the second wave and very little invitations for non top-tiers. I thought admission process is all about fairness in a timely manner.

You mentioned that they are not done reading applications. So on that point, I feel like the reason why there are 2 batches of sending out invitations is to review 2+2 applications in between those 2 batches so the main purpose of the second batch is for 2+2s and if they have some remaining spots left then they will pick among the regular applicants.

But by that logic, if that were the case, wouldn't they actually want to give first dip on the scheduling + more time to prepare for the non-top-tier candidates, to even the playing field a bit within that crowd (i.e., from the adcoms perspective, and from a 'fairness" point of view, the top-tier folks wouldn't really need the extra time).

At the end of the day I just think 4k apps would be a lot to read in three weeks. 4k apps, 4 weeks to read = 1k per week makes a lot of sense to me, and I really doubt they're pulling the wool over our eyes when they explicitly say it's not "top-tier" vs. "not-top-tier" thing.

This just seems really contrary to the way Dee Leopold has spoken about the process. And 2+2 is a much smaller cohort than full-time apps.

I suppose we should just bear Dee's words in mind:

"I've said this before, but please don't speculate or develop theories or algorithms about first vs. second. It doesn't work that way. And it has nothing to do with when you submitted, where you live, or the first letter of your last name."

For those invited yesterday...

Can we just talk for a second about how damn quick the on-campus interview spots were filled up?!?!? I decided last night that I wanted to attend the HBS-hosted events on Feb 19, then interview in the morning on Feb 20th. I guess everyone else had the same idea....within 6 minutes after the web portal opening, both Feb 20 and March 6 were completely full. By the time I had time to react and hit refresh, Feb 27th was filled. I ended up settling for a Thursday afternoon interview on Feb 19th....but jesus, they went quick. I just checked...right now (less than 90 minutes after becoming available), the only available on-campus dates are Feb 12 and 13. Anybody else have a similar experience?

Does anyone know if they will open up more interview time slots? I don't mean to freak out anybody out who is hoping for an invite on Wednesday Feb 4, but if HBS hasn't allotted more time slots for them, they are in a bad spot if they want an on-campus interview. How are they supposed to drop what they are doing and fly to Boston just 8 days after finding out they got an interview? Not to mention the cost of last-minute airfare and lodging. And that is all ASSUMING that the 12th and 13th are still available by the time Wednesday rolls around...

I realize Skype is technically an option....but I feel like everyone should at least, by default, have a shot at interviewing in-person on-campus. That seems like the very LEAST HBS admissions could do for us applicants....at least give us a chance to show how serious we are about applying by interviewing in person.

EDIT: I'm not trying to sound ungrateful for the invitation to interview, nor am I trying to hurl accusations at HBS. I'm sure they will do right by the applicants - of all the schools I've applied to, I've felt waaaayy more engaged with HBS admissions, largely in part because of Dee Leopold and her blog. I was just a bit bewildered when I was booking my on-campus interview at how quickly the time slots were vanishing before my eyes....

That's a pretty silly accusation given that HBS is more transparent than pretty much every other top 20 program in terms of laying out its entire admissions timeline. If people are really worried about an extra week making a difference on their interview prep (which it won't) then they can pick a slot at the back end of the interview window to maximize their prep time. It's not like everyone automatically jumps on the latest possible slots--some people like to get their interviews over with as early as possible.

And if I remember correctly from previous years, they make a few more interview day/time slots available when they roll out the second set of invites.

There are a limited number of hours in the day and a limited number of adcom members and a limited number of days until they must have all interviews complete so they can make the final admit/ding decisions.

Since HBS doesn't want to pass off interviews to its alums, then it's pretty clear that there are going to be a limited number of on-campus interview slots given that they also have to account for sending adcom to all the hub cities for applicants who cannot swing a trip to Boston from, say, Beijing or Johannesburg.

Interviewing by Skype or in a hub city doesn't say anything negative about "how serious [you] are about applying" if it's the only feasible option for you.

Don't quote me 100% on that, but think about it....if adcom did decide to send out 100 more invites next week, would it make sense for them to punish those 100 people by leaving them only with the scraps left over from the first batch of invites?

I agree - the available spots were filled incredibly quickly. I had to go to my second choice time slot because the first one was already taken in the first minute, but I am getting paranoid that my second sign up wasn't recognized because I still haven't received an email confirmation (which they indicated would be sent).

Has anyone received an email confirmation yet? Trying to determine whether my registration went through or not.

My email confirmation came pretty much right away. Might be worth a call....
