Oh, oh, I know!

Tell me something about yourself

This is a hard one, what do they expect us to answer?
hmmmm, not a common question, altho some variants are more challenging, e.g. "Suppose I had not read your app and just met you, introduce yourself, mention what you have done, what you are doing, and what you'd like to do?" Worth prepping for that.

I have two guesses:

Why did you choose your undergraduate institution?
Why did you choose your current employer?

I'll try one:

Why should HBS take you?

hmmmmm, a powerful question that often does not get asked, more often than not in fact, since it is the sum of all the other questions, but when asked, often at the end, it can be a pwerful moment, where you need to be able to summarize your deal (or elevator pitch etc HBS not found of stress-y type questions, altho some HBS types do say flat out, "we get a lot of aps fr. smart kids like you, why you) , in terms of goals, what you can contribute, what school can do for you, how you have impact, etc. etc. Worth preparing for, since same question often occurs in diff. forms, "What are your strengths, what will you contribute, how will your classmates remember you, etc." You need answers for all of those. [/quote]

Sandy, what about "Tell me Mr. Skilling (it could be replaced with anybody's name), are you smart?" "Yes, I'm f****ing smart" and you automatically get it.

As I go get myself a nice bottle of Grey Goose, I leave you all with the lyrics of a song, very appropriate for us non-invitees:

In Hindi:
Quote:
Hum na samjhe the
baat itni si
khaab sheeshe ke
duniya paththar ki

In English:
Quote:
I did not understand
a simple thing
Dreams are made of glasses
The world, of stone!!

good night friends!

Actual song on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCjfqOI8U-s

Honestly, oddly enough I'm still very optimistic. Not sure what reason I have. But something. Something. Keeps pulling at my gut telling me it will come. Not to mention I like those 1% odds far more so!

Call me weird, but that is in the end who I am.

Ok, well this is pretty sweet - I got the email at about 10 after 12 (it came at 12:04 but my computer updates the email box every 10 or so minutes so it didn't come until 10 after) and every last NY spot is taken. Are you kidding me?!?!

If they slotted NYC like they did in Sao Paulo, it's just 6 slots per day. I logged on 6 minutes past noon and there were some slots gone. Fortunately, I was able to get a spot on a very convenient time for me since I will be flying in an out Sao Paulo on the very same day...

How do the ~50 invitees who get their invitation between now and April 6 do the interview if all the hub slots fill up? Are phone and Boston the only options? If so, then that's pretty unfair...!

Why do you think they issue all the interviews in one single day? The system is chaotic in the sense that you had to be in front of the pc at the moment they were supposed to release the link and all the people rushed to get their spots...

It is pretty unfair for the last 50, considering that those 50 are for real.

let that be the final post about this matter. take it to PM like praetorian said.

I am not quite sure what the censorship is about. Quam's little "rant" helped me get over the HBS ding and I enjoyed the exchange that followed. Nobody was flat-out disrespectful/offensive and Praetorian's warning struck me as a bit odd (very 1984-ish). Is it a sin to disagree on GMATClub? Sounds like a bad idea to me but then what do I know about internet message boards.

*goes back to plotting my HBS revenge*

I have been invited for an interview with a member of the HBS Admission board; scheduled it for next week over the telephone.
Any tips/advice will be appreciated - Thanks

PE firms tell MBA’s: No Need to Apply, but please keep worshiping us
HMMMMM, CONFIRMS WHAT WE HAVE BEEN SAYING ALL ALONG ABOUT ZILCH CHANCES OF BREAKING INTO PE WITHOUT PRIOR PE EXPERIENCE. SO DONT SAY THAT AS YOUR GOAL IN ANY B SCHOOL ESSAY UNLESS YOU QUALIFY. B SCHOOLS DONT LIKE UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE CLOGGING UP THEIR GRADUATION CEREMONIES.

from Wall Street Journal blog

PE Firms To MBAs: We’re Hiring, We’re Just Not Hiring You
There’s good news and bad news for business school graduates looking to secure a spot with a private equity firm this year, according to a panel of private equity professionals that spoke at the venture capital and private equity conference held at Harvard Business School on Saturday.

The good news is that after a virtual drought in 2008 and early 2009, private equity firms are starting to hire again. The bad news is that they aren’t hiring many MBA level positions.

“It’s really taking place at the junior levels or the senior levels,” said Sachi Gahan, a managing director with executive recruiter Glocap Search. “Most of my work is at [the] principal or associate [level], but very little at the senior associate [level]. There’s a big stack-up of talent in a lot of these partnerships.”

After private equity firms hired aggressively out of business schools during the boom years of 2005 to 2007, “Most firms are not in a hurry to get back to those levels,” said Ryan Harper, a vice president at Boston-based Summit Partners. However, he said Summit does plan to hire one or two vice presidents this year.

These days, deal experience is a must, as an analyst or associate at a private equity firm or through work at another organization, such as an investment bank or a consulting firm, panelists said.

“Give us a sense that you know what it’s like to work on a deal,” said Michael Berk, managing director at Boston-based TA Associates Inc., which also continues to selectively hire MBAs this year. “The hard truth is if you don’t have prior deal experience, it is very tough to get into TA and a lot of more established larger private equity firms.”

The most common question asked in HBS interview is "Why did you attend [xxxx] college or university.
They often ask this early, as a way to calm you down, but it has the opposite impact on lots of kids, who panic and start thinking, "Jeepers b.c. I did not get in to my first 3 choices, so that is why, but I cannot say that, sooooo, the walls are moving in here, help, help, help."

Anyone know any good answers???
