HBS and these 400 word limits, arghhh. these require so much editing as you have to make sure that EVERY sentence says something/has a purpose

edit: and after completing the essays for this app, i can see why some people say essays for HBS don't really matter much and they'll know all they want to know about you from your numbers, resume, and recs...i don't feel like these essays have the impact that the topics from schools like wharton and kellogg have...altho i am still pouring the same amount a blood sweat and tears into these that i did for the others, better safe than sorry :)

(and here i am in the middle of the night, delirious from 3 days straight of essay writing)

I don't agree that essays serve little real purpose. The HBS Adcomm spend at least 20 minutes reviewing the essays. They read it in no particular order, but do refer back and forth if they find that a current essay builds up from a theme present in another. A good way might be for candidates to have some linking words/sentences in all their essays. It is generally agreed that the best set of essay would read like different chapters of the same book, rather than totally independent pieces of narratives.

As far as the 400-word restrictions are concerned, ever word counts. It's not just about sentences anymore.

Yeah, these 400 word essays are killing me too. at first i tried to adapt some of my Chicago/Wharton/Stanford essays from R1, but I've given up on that since it just comes out too choppy with all the deletions. Now I'm just trying to rewrite them from scratch.

How important do you guys think it is that the mistake essay be interesting? I have two different examples I could use: one where the mistake led to some legit learning where I needed to improve, but a somewhat less captivating situation; or a second with an interesting story but sort of a b.s. lesson. Any thoughts on this?

I was waitlisted without interview.

Does anyone know the breakdown of the waitlist between those interviewed and not interviewed?

i'm so confused as to which essays to use. i wrote three of the optional essays and now have to choose two. i'm supposed to have an alum help me, but i still can figure out if i should do the difficult decision or career vision, i feel obligated to submit the community engagement and per sandy's blog and my students currently at HBS, it seems everyone does the career vision just b/c (plus it offers a place to say why HBS). :?:

Anyone else struggling to get through the HBS application? It's my last one and I am so burnt out and intimidated by the pool of applicants. Even though I'm applying to other great schools, somehow this one seems the most daunting.

I stare at the questions and feel like nothing I write is going to be amazing enough. I've started all of the essays but keep getting derailed by my frustration.

Anyone have any tips for getting through this application?

While this may sound almost silly, I actually find it easier to get the essays moving once I feel I've made some progress on the overall application - that is, get all the online stuff done in your first sitting. Fill in all the sections, upload your resume, transcript etc. It actually helps me transition into a new application without taxing myself too much, and then you feel as if you've already achieved a fair bit even before you sit down to start your first essay. The essays become easier for me when they are the sole focus and all the other irritating stuff is out of the way.

Next, first attempt an essay that's easily taken from one you've already done - so for HBS, my advice would be to tackle the career goals essay first, assuming you're doing that. It's definitely easier to write the second essay knowing you've got a pretty solid / tried-and-tested draft of the first essay behind you.

All this may seem obvious, but I think it does help one's overall attitude towards an application.

Gosh! I totally forgot about the Resume! Still have to frame that. And prepare the transcript. I've downloaded the form from the applyyourself HBS portal, and I'm totally flummoxed. Can I use any other format?

it was easier for me to go to my college and ask for printed copies of my transcripts. i then just scanned them and uploaded them that way. dont know if this is an option for you or not (if distance is an issue - maybe they can just mail you a copy?)

Would strongly recommended getting a physical copy from your college and scanning and uploading that. It's probably even easier for the admissions committee, plus it will save you the pains of adapting things to the alternate format.

Your college should be able to send this to you quite quickly through mail, in case you don't have a copy at your end already.

I believe HBS also asks for school transcripts? I can't get transcripts from school. I was thinking of drafting the college transcripts myself and submitting them. and then if accepted, getting the ones from the colleges.

I don't think you need anything from before undergrad, except to fill in basic details about high school (like name of school, location). Though it's worth checking, since you mention it.

I doubt that a school transcript would be of any interest to them. The way I look at it, the fact that you got into college basically encapsulates all you did before that - which now is frankly quite dated.

Provided you did not go to a massive state university, most registrars will email you a scanned, unofficial copy of your transcript, which suffices for virtually every school that uses the "applyyourself" software. If you called today and simply explained your request, there is no reason you couldn't have a copy by next week. It saved me tons of time.

I have been doing some cursory reading of the profiles that were invited to interview and then admitted and their GMAT score. I dont see a lot of sub 720 interview invites / admits.

Did someone with a sub 720 GMAT get an interview invite/admit?

i'm in the same boat with the sub 720.

i've decided to retake my GMAT after submitting. at best, by the time i get a new score, itll be on my record sheet and they'll use that, at worst, if not and i get waitlisted, the higher score will help.

so that's my plan as a sub 750 Gmatter.

Good question - I don't see many sub 720's but the last admitted class had middle 50% from 700 - 760 so I would assume that quite a number of people have 700 and 710.

My friend got in R1 with 710, but he also had 3.9 GPA from Ivy Engineering. Since the middle 50% range is 700 - 760, how much marginal value do you guys think there is to score from sub-720 to 760. I would imagine not much, but who knows?

At this point, I think its all about other aspects of the app.
