Guys, I have an urgent question regarding the recommendation letters - is HBS SERIOUS about the 250 word-limit per question?

Compared to other schools, I feel that this gives very little space for recommenders to elaborate about the applicant and provide specific examples. After all, the 1st question only touches on how he/she knows you. The other 2 questions (with the 3rd one being most-opened) are similarly quite short. I'm drafting one for a recommender right now and having a difficult time fitting everything in the 3rd question.

I'm curious about people's responses to this as well. Two of my recommenders have already complained vociferously about the forced brevity. I know one has reluctantly done a lot of editing down. The other is choosing to ignore the limit but still pare down what she has written for my other schools, which is more than double what Harvard allows.

Infanteed, I am taking comfort from this blog post (https://www.hbs.edu/mba/admissions/blog-all.html) by Dee, which says that these word limits are simply "guidelines" and that the page will not get cut off at the 250th word.

What happens if I'm over the word count limit in my essays? Does my work get cut off? What about my recommenders?
Your essays do not get cut off if you go over the word limit... that being said, after reading many, many essays, we have a good feel for whether an essay is going over the limit. I think it's fair to say that we expect a candidate to be able to edit effectively - but don't stress over a few extra words.

We're getting a lot of similar questions from recommenders wondering if their remarks are cut short - they aren't. We have suggested word limits for recommenders that amount to roughly a page of text; we do this to give those not familiar with writing recommendations a sense of the response we're looking for. If your recommenders have more to say, that's fine - their file upload doesn't get cut off after a single page or after a certain number of words.

Whew.

Wow, relative to the traffic during R1 the HBS thread is dead. What's going on, is nobody else applying R2? Oh well, looks like I might actually have a chance then...

And me! And me!

But, uh, I only just started the app today.

So you two are still in great shape.

Aenigma--I feel you! While I started the app awhile ago, I am definitely really really far behind considering I need to submit this application on Monday night.

Yeah, LB20! Let's do this! I submitted four apps last week so there was no way HBS was going to get any real love until now. At least you know about Stern (congrats, by the way!) -- I'm working double-time to get that one out this week while still fielding Harvard's fiendish essays....

Good luck! You'll see me around this thread for serious in a couple of days when I start, you know, panicking.

YES! It is nice to have a buddy who is also in panic mode. Thanks for the congrats--I am really happy I went for Stern in R1 because I do have that no matter what and I would love to go there, so I will be happy with pretty much any outcome here. Not to say that I wouldn't love to have a choice between schools, of course :).

As for HBS--it seems like it's a crapshoot if any of us will get in, so I'm just going to bust my a** the next 6 days and just shoot for the stars. I'll be here, panicking as well. These essays just feel so different from the other schools--length, the way the topics are worded, the combination of stories that I am telling, the fact that there is really very little need to say "why HBS". Anyway--we'll see!!! Good luck to you too, especially with Stern & HBS at the same time. Also--well done on getting 4 apps out in the same week, that is impressive.

We're cruising in the same boat man! Average GPA but decent WE and GMAT. And I've yet to finalise one essay, make the transcripts, draft the resume, fill in the blanks staring out at me on the ApplyYourself form. Was thinking of taking a day off from work to complete the app this week. So I'm throwing in my hat in R1. It isn't too big, barely enough to cover my head :)

IMHO, HBS is bar far the most difficult application. CBS, Booth and Stanford were more "enjoyable" in so far as my ability to communicate my entire story through the essays. HBS, in contrast, has absurd word limits, no optional essay (per se, 500 characters is simply not enough)... Ughhh.

Sorry, just need to vent :) How's everyone's app coming along?

Just wanted to say - we can finally see the light at the end of tunnel! I don't know about you guys but this has been one of the most intense experiences of my life: studied for the Gmat for 3 months, wrote essays for 3 months -- giving up every spare moment improve my apps. I am trying my best to get HBS submitted tomorrow so I can hit the slopes in Tahoe and celebrate!

I'll pour one out for the rest of you.... almost there!

i agree with HBS being the most difficult.

I applied to London Biz School and I thought their questions were to specific, but HBS, makes it extremely difficult for nontraditional applicants like myself that need the space to explain our career paths, rather than "i went to work at a bank and i did awesome there".

It actually kinda pisses me off.

it's funny but i actually had the opposite experience with my HBS app. i felt that the word limits prevented me from rambling on about god knows what, and forced me to just answer the question being asked. hopefully at least a small part of what i learned doing the HBS app stuck in my mind, and was able to shine through in my other 2 apps.

I thought the word limits would help because I do have a tendency to write florid prose, but I'm running into the same trouble you are, lakai777. I have things to explain. My accomplishments are not easily quantified in "saved the company 13% on overhead" terms.

Also: I think for those of us, traditional or otherwise, who did not climb Mt. Everest or regain vision after a lifetime of blindness, these essays make it harder to differentiate oneself than some of the other schools' essays. Or maybe I just skimmed too many of those "65 Successful HBS Essays" in the bookstore. Sigh.

Yeah, I actually don't mind the HBS essays. The word limits are extremely tough, but otherwise they're pretty straight-forward. It's not like that crappy Stanford app where I got conned by D. Bolts into pouring my heart out in the "What matters most?" essay. I really opened myself up, and I think more than anything else that is what got me dinged there. In hindsight, I would've taken a much more conservative tact if I could do that one over again. In any case, no real opportunity to fall down that trap with the HBS app, which is nice.

Anyone have any strong opinions about the accomplishments essay. I'm currently only using one accomplishment from my professional life (which constitutes my last 4 yrs). Is this going to be fatal?

Good luck with the final push everyone!

How are you guys displaying your resumes? Do you have all of your work experience in 1 section, or did you separate the full-time from the part-time?
