Just coming here to vent...

Then I pointed out that I was 150 words over the 400-word limit. He was horrified by how small 400 words is, having never written anything smaller than 500 words for the schools he applied to several years ago.

Oy.
I have mostly been able to stay within the word limits (+ or - 10 words) and communicate what I wanted to.. Reading all the posts, I am concerned if I am writing my essays right or cutting out important information... May be I am not that accomplished!

I think you're just lucky--I am having problems because I got really used to writing within a 500 word limit and getting the essays really concise & to the point. So cutting beyond that point is a really big hurdle to cross without feeling like I'm losing some of the value I have added to the essay with a few extra sentences.

agnok, just my personal opinion (which applies to most bschools); admission to a top program with a "low/very low" GMAT is an exception and not the rule. Keep in mind that the application is quite in depth (application, essays, scores, LORs, etc.). Therefore, without incorporating all the elements of one's application, it's very difficult to say "you will get in, you will get dinged".

Brief, it's quite a black box process. A great score should help but certainly won't secure you a seat anywhere (on its own).

What I am trying to understand is what is a Low GMAT-- 700 and under 600 and under.. from a BSchool prespective.

I think they look at it combined with your GPA. If you have above average GPA then 680+ should be fine. If you have below average GPA, you want a higher GMAT to "offset" it. I use that in quotes because the GMAT doesn't really offset the grade, but you do want to appease any doubts they have in your academic abilities.

Do I need to send in my official GMAT scores to HBS when I submit the application? or is that some thing for after admission?

You need to have an official score report sent to HBS before deadline. It doesn't matter if they receive it before then, as long as you request it.

On what constitutes a low GMAT: I would say anything below the 50% range of the school would be an actively low GMAT. So for HBS's case the scores are:

Middle 50% GMAT Score Range:700-760
Average: ~720.

So i think this is how it would break down:
<700: You've got an uphill battle as you'd be in the bottom quartile of the accepted class. Obviously not impossible, but you will probably need a high GPA or something else special to offset your gmat. I think adcom would describe this as "low".
700-720: Your GMAT isn't helping you, but as long as you have a decent GPA, it probably won't be much of a factor. I think adcom would describe this as "good"
730-760: GMAT might help you out a bit with a weaker GPA, but it isn't going to blow the adcom away. In this range, I think you're probably pretty well positioned. I think adcom would describe this as "solid".
770-800: GMAT is actively helping you. Obviously, the score won't make up for a 2.0 GPA or uninteresting work experience. But this will definitely be a positive factor in your application. I think adcom would describe this as "impressive".

I thought i heard that everything is internet based these days... school would receive access to your official report instantly (unless AWA isn't yet available).

I think "sent" means that it is sent electronically (maybe a paper copy too, I don't know), but I do think there is a delay in between when you request it and when it is sent and probably when they receive it. I know that when I requested 3 schools at the same time, HBS was marked as "fulfilled" 2 days after the other schools for some reason.

Interesting. I recently requested that official copies of my score be sent to the schools i'm applying to this year.. I did it in the middle of the night and within an hour or so it said it was fulfilled. I guess there's a bit more to it than meets the eye... SHOCKING, i know! :-)

Do you think an application will be put in R3 if you requested the scores a few days after the deadline???? I forgot to send mine to Wharton until a few days later, but my application status still reads "complete-r2"

I can't imagine they would... especially given that it could take weeks to get your official score if you had just taken the GMAT a few days before the RD2 deadline.

I really wouldn't worry about it.

I was just filling out the online application for HBS and I came across a very unusual question - "Sibling's Age"
not sibling's name or profession or educational qualification, just age!! HOW IN THE WORLD IS THAT RELEVANT TO MY APPLICATION???? i know this is an optional question but still how is it relevant..

Hi all,

Do you know how recommenders submit their replies to Harvard's three main questions? Is it a single file upload, three separate uploads, or simple entry into an unformatted text window?

One of my recommenders is traveling hardcore and working on my rec from keyboards missing multiple keys. I am trying to simplify her life as much as possible by formatting her rec such that it will literally take her only a couple of clicks to enter it into Harvard's app.

Thanks!
